Some books remain with us long after we have read and stacked them back on the library shelf. The Little House on Prairie book series is one such example. Written by Laura Ingalls Wilder, these books are remarkable for tugging at our hearts even today. Although the book and the TV show based off of it are fictional, they do contain parts that are taken from the author's real life. Laura has mingled the boundaries of reality and fiction in her literary endeavor. Have a look at some pictures from the lives of people behind this beloved series. Laura Ingalls Wilder was born in a farm in Wisconsin in 1867 where she spent the first five years of her life. Wikimedia Commons Laura's parents Charles and Caroline Ingalls moved around a lot. They moved from Wisconsin to Missouri, to Kansas and back to Wisconsin. From thence to Minnesota and Iowa where the parents struggled to make the two ends meet. Wikimedia Commons Laura had 3 sisters and one brother who died at only nine months of age when the family was transitioning to Iowa. When Laura turned 15, the family finally settled down in South Dakota. Wikimedia Commons Just like her parents are characterized as "Ma" and "Pa" in the book, Laura's boyfriend, Almanzo Wilder is also a character. However, the real age gap between the couple was ten years. Wikimedia Commons Laura married Almanzo and moved to Missouri in 1894, after moving around a bit first. They had a daughter, Rose and a son who did not live long after birth. The initial nine years were extremely tough for the family. During this time, Almanzo also suffered a stroke that left him disabled. Wikimedia Commons Rose actually became an established author before her mother. On her daughter's persuation, Laura began writing her memoir, which also timely as the family's savings diminished during the Stock Market crash of 1929. Wikimedia Commons Her attempt to write about her life gave birth to every bookworm's favorite - the Little House of the Prairie series. Laura's target audience were children. However, no adult can deny feeling a connection with a story that details the struggles, dashed hopes, miseries and sweet memories of a pioneer life. Wikimedia Commons Almanzo passed away in 1949 and 8 years later, Laura died at the age of 89. The Little House novel was published after her death, although an abbreviated version of Pioneer Girl was published in 1932. Laura was greatly loved and admired during and after her lifetime. Once the TV show based on her books series hit the television in 1974, there was no end to Laura's popularity. Wikimedia Commons Laura touched many lives.
