Every day, it seems like kids are coming up with newfangled slang words. But what happened to all the old-fashioned words we grew up using? Old-fashioned terms are still thrown around from time to time, even by young adults who are old souls at heart. It's no secret that language has evolved massively over the years, and the origin of these terms might be the most interesting part of it all. 1. Dungarees Wikimedia Commons Dungarees were another word for pants, blue denim, or overalls. My mom used to call my jeans 'dungarees;' she would never actually call them 'jeans' or 'pants'! The origin of this word actually came from the 1600s! 2. Pedal Pushers Wikimedia Commons You mean capris? 'Pedal Pushers' were created in the 1940s so women's pants wouldn't get caught in their bicycle chains. They were really just pants cuffed at the ankle! 3. Picture Show Wikimedia Commons Back in the day, we used to go to the 'picture show' — what we know as the movies! This term originated back in the early 1900s. 4. Nylons The U.S. National Archives We typically call them tights or pantyhose today, but occasionally I still hear people call them 'nylons'! This term originated in 1940. 5. Jalopy Wikimedia Commons The phrase 'jalopy' was mainly used for describing an old, decrepit automobile back in the 1920s. Sometimes the term is still used on TV shows and in movies! 6. Parlor Wikimedia Commons People still throw around this word when describing a nail or hair salon. Originating all the way back to the late 1100s, 'Parlor' used to be another term for the contemporary living room in someone's house! 7. Galoshes simpleinsomnia What is now known as the modern-day 'rain boot' was originally an idea that consisted of wearing overshoes on top of your normal shoes to prevent them from getting wet! Britches Wikipedia 'Britches' became the common term for any pants or slacks that were non-denim. The word actually dates back to 1880! 9. Ice Box Wikimedia Commons Dating back to the 1830s, the 'ice box' was the old-fashioned version of what we now know as a refrigerator. Even after refrigerators became popular in the 1930s, people still called them ice boxes! 10. Safety Razor simpleinsomnia The 'safety razor' consisted of guards to prevent cutting the skin when shaving. Even though this term originated in 1875, I'm pretty sure these are still used today for both men and women! 11. Snow Broth Wikimedia Commons Nope, it's not snow soup! Snow broth was a term to describe melting snow, or slush, as we know it. It dates back to the late 1500s/early 1600s. 12. Lumming simpleinsomnia It's not an official word in the dictionary, but 'lumming' was a real term to describe heavy rainfall back in the 1900s! 13.
