Elvis Presley purchased his famous Graceland estate when he was only 22 years old. He purchased it for $102,500 in 1957. It continues to be one of the most visited homes in the country because people still love Elvis and his legacy. Here are some things you may not know about Elvis and the Graceland estates: 1. His daily required shopping list included sauerkraut and Pepsi Wikimedia Commons Elvis had a list of food items that he wanted every day and to be available at all times. Here are a few things that were on his shopping list: Pepsi, orange drink, sauerkraut, banana pudding (he wanted it cooked fresh nightly), ice cream (vanilla and chocolate), and ingredients for meatloaf and sauce. Eventually, he became too much to handle for Elvis and Scatter lived in a climate-controlled room in Graceland. 3. He used to watch three TVs at once Wikimedia Commons He watched a lot of television and would often have three TVs on at once. There were no remote controls at this time so he would shoot the TV set with a pistol to change the channel rapidly. 4. The upstairs was off limits to guests Flickr His bedroom and master suite on the second floor was off-limits to guests. He was found dead in 1977 in his bathroom that is in the master suite. When the home was opened as a public museum of sorts in 1982, the second floor was also off limits. Still, no one is allowed in except close family members. The home remains the second most visited home in the United States, just after the White House. His body was moved because people tried to steal it Wikimedia Commons Elvis' body was originally in a grave in the Forest Hill Cemetery. However, people tried to steal it so Elvis and his mother Gladys were moved to Graceland's Meditation Garden in 1977. You can visit the garden for free. 7. Elvis isn't the one who named it Graceland Wikimedia Commons Graceland was built in 1939 by Dr. and Mrs. Thomas Moore. They decided to name the property Graceland after Mrs. Moore's Aunt Grace. Aunt Grace was the original owner of the land so they wanted to pay her tribute. Elvis' parent saw the home for sale in 1957 and put a down payment of $1,000. Elvis purchased the home and property for $102,500 (it would be about $880,380 in today's currency). 8. Bruce Springsteen is said to have trespassed on Elvis' property Wikimedia Commons Many people tried to trespass onto the Graceland property to try to meet Elvis. Bruce Springsteen was one of them when he was a young man! Turns out Elvis wasn't even home when Bruce decided to "stop by". 9. Elvis had a buzzer on his dining room table Flickr Elvis was rich enough to have staff so he had a doorbell buzzer installed underneath his dining room table.
