Sidney Poitier has passed away at the age of 94. He was best known for being an actor and helping the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s. He was best known for his roles in In The Heat of the Night and Guess Who's Coming to Dinner. Sidney was also the first male black actor to win the Academy Award for Best Actor (for 1963's Lilies of the Field). Beyond working as an actor, director, and producer, he was also a voice for civil rights and ambassador for his home country of the Bahamas. While his work was trailblazing and iconic, it wasn't always easy. Born February 20, 1927 in Miami, Florida, he moved to New York City at the age of 16 and worked as a dishwasher before enlisting in the Army during World War II. After his stint there, he got into the American Negro Theatre, eventually finding roles on Broadway and in films. His career truly began in the '50s. One of his first big roles was costarring with Tony Curtis in The Defiant Ones (1958), for which he earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor.
