On June 19th, 2019, the Gaines decided to take a trip to Memphis, TN to present St. Jude Children's Hospital with a check for $1.5 million. They also built a playhouse for them as part of the donation! At the event, the two played dress-up in bumblebee headbands while greeting the kids, playing the piano, singing songs, and more. They also did a storytime reading of their newest book called We Are The Gardeners. From the looks of the photos, it seemed to be a complete success! In our world, demo day marks the end of one chapter and the beginning of a newer, more exciting one,” Chip says while at the event. “And that’s exactly what we want for you — we’re pulling for each and every one of you.” The pair raised the donations through a social media campaign called #ChipInChallenge. With the help of some celebrity friends (Jennifer Lopez, Alex Rodriguez, and more) they were able to make all of this happen. Chip and Joanna Gaines / St. Jude “When we heard that the space outside of Target House could use a little love, we knew right away that we wanted to create a sweet playhouse for the kids to enjoy,” Joanna says about their newly designed playhouse. “There’s something so special about spending time together outside and while we’re hopeful that these families will not have to stay here for very long, we wanted to create a retreat for them to explore while they are here.” The playhouse is covered in flowers. He definitely got a lot more than that! However, when his close friend Gabriele “Gabe” Grunewald entered hospice care after a long battle with cancer, Chip raised the goal to $500,000.
