Tina Louise became unforgettable as glamorous movie star Ginger Grant on Gilligan’s Island. However, when she first signed on to the classic sitcom, she apparently had a very different understanding of what the show would be. According to creator Sherwood Schwartz, someone had led Louise to believe that Ginger would sit at the center of the series. According to SlashFilm, that misunderstanding quickly caused trouble once Louise arrived in Hollywood and read the scripts. Instead of finding a sitcom built around her character, she discovered an ensemble comedy about seven castaways. Nevertheless, Louise stayed with the series and helped turn Ginger into one of television’s most recognizable characters. Ginger initially appeared as a secretary rather than a movie star, and Kit Smythe played the role. After producers reworked the series, they brought in Louise, who had been performing alongside Carol Burnett in the Broadway musical Fade Out—Fade In. According to Schwartz, Louise signed her contract in New York before heading to Hollywood. Schwartz later recalled that Louise came into his office upset because none of them focused on Ginger. She then explained that someone had described Gilligan’s Island to her as the story of a movie star stranded with six other people. Schwartz said he knew nothing about that description. Instead, he explained that the sitcom would rotate its focus among the seven main characters, meaning Ginger would receive featured stories but would not lead every episode. The character also changed during the development process. Early plans reportedly envisioned Ginger as more aloof and sarcastic. However, Louise and Schwartz worked together to create the glamorous version viewers remember, drawing inspiration from Hollywood stars such as Marilyn Monroe. As a result, Ginger’s movie-star personality became an important part of the sitcom’s humor. She also holds a unique place in its history as the last surviving member of the sitcom’s main cast.
