We’re very lucky to live here in the USA – there is so much to see and do. Most visitors to our country are drawn to one of the big cities like New York or LA, but let’s take a look at some of the hidden gems off the beaten track: 1. Holy Land USA – Waterbury, Connecticut This derelict site used to be a Christian amusement park that opened in the 1950s and closed in the early 1980s. Dinosaur World in Cave City, Kentucky This vast green space is full of full-scale dinosaur models, and they pride themselves on being dog-friendly. Thor’s Well – Yachats, Oregon This natural phenomenon off the coast of Oregon is a thing of beauty, but don’t get too close or it could pull you in! Always respect the water. youtube.com 4. Glass Beach – Fort Bragg, California This former trash site is quite beautiful in its own unique way, with a beach made up of thousands of shards of colored glass. Slab City, California Located in the Sonoran Desert on a former military site, this semi-lawless “city” is a unique community made up of all kinds of funky people. Squatters, hippies, and drifters regularly camp out there, and there are a some who live there all year round, despite there being no electricity or running water. Cadillac Ranch – Amarillo, Texas This hefty art exhibition was erected in 1974, and was made the brainchild of an eccentric billionaire, whose intention was to baffle the locals of Amarillo. Winchester Mystery House – San Jose, California This massive 10,000 window mansion was funded by Sarah Winchester, a rich heiress who apparently had the house constructed to appease bad spirits. Duck March — Peabody Hotel, Memphis, Tennessee For 90 years, this hotel has held an annual duck march, where the cute little things walk down the red carpet to the hotel’s lobby fountain. It started as a prank by a bunch of local hunters who set them loose in the hotel – but the guests loved them, and the rest is history. atlasobscura.com 9. Neptune Memorial Reef – Key Biscayne, Florida This artificial reef is a tribute to the lost city of Atlantis. Those interested in being part of the display for eternity can have their cremated remains placed in the exhibit – hey, each to their own, I guess! leisurepro.com 10. The albino squirrels of Olney, Illinois The city of Olney has the largest known population of these cute critters in the country and holds an to make sure the population is thriving.
