Michael Gandolfini, the only son of the late James Gandolfini, grew up in the wake of his father’s rise to stardom, as his childhood coincided with the period when the HBO television series The Sopranos became a staple in many American households. Born in 1999, the same year the series premiered, Michael had the opportunity to visit his dad, who portrayed the character of the formidable mob boss, Tony Soprano.
Just like his on-screen character, the late actor was very protective of his son and never allowed him to visit the production set during filming. In a new interview, Michael, who is now following in his late dad’s footsteps, opened up about his upbringing and the reasons behind his father’s decision to shield him from The Sopranos set.

Speaking with The Wall Street Journal, the 25-year-old revealed that during his childhood visits to the set of The Sopranos, he was confined to his father’s trailer, where he kept himself busy with a drawer full of toys.
He explained that his parents did that to shield him from the show’s mature themes, including its violent scenes and strong language, ensuring he could enjoy a normal childhood. Michael also disclosed that his late dad was of the opinion that even if he wanted to pursue a career in acting just like him, he must carve out his path on his terms.
