It’s been nearly 60 years since Dick Van Dyke and Julie Andrews brought magic and music to the screen in Mary Poppins, but the memory of that time hasn’t faded for the now 99-year-old actor. The film, which blended fantasy and live-action storytelling, followed a mysterious nanny who changes the lives of the Banks family through songs, adventures, and unexpected life lessons.
Released in 1964, it earned both critical and box office success, with Andrews winning an Academy Award for her performance. Even though they haven’t acted together again, Van Dyke says their connection remains. In a recent appearance at a public event in Malibu, he reflected on his time with Andrews and how their friendship has lasted over the years.
Julie Andrews turned down Dick Van Dyke’s offer for another children’s musical movie
After Mary Poppins, Van Dyke moved on to another family-friendly musical, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, which was released in 1968. Set around a quirky inventor, his children, and a magical flying car, the movie took viewers on a series of whimsical journeys.
Van Dyke had a role in mind for Andrews in this new project, the character of Truly Scrumptious but she wasn’t interested. According to him, Andrews had decided not to take on any more children’s movies at the time, even though he still enjoyed working in that genre. In the end, the role went to British actress Sally Ann Howes.
He still keeps in touch with her
Though Andrews now lives in Switzerland and they haven’t spoken directly in a while, Van Dyke’s wife, Arlene, confirmed they still keep a connection. Whenever one of them receives an award or special recognition, they send messages and videos to support each other from afar.
Van Dyke described Andrews as kind and patient during their time filming together. He recalled how she helped him during recording sessions when he struggled to hit notes. That behind-the-scenes teamwork left a strong impression on him. While they may not have shared more screen time after Mary Poppins, their friendship continues off-screen.
