Anne Heche’s Blood Tested Positive For Narcotics, Says LAPD

by Dana Daly

A drug test has turned up more information

On Friday, actress Anne Heche reportedly crashed her car into a Los Angeles home. The accident left her in a coma for several days before she succumbed to her injuries and died. After eye-witnesses claimed to have seen her speeding down the road, investigators issued a drug test that found Heche had narcotics in her system.

TMZ reports that law enforcement listed cocaine and fentanyl as the drugs found in her system. Heche was specifically under the influence of cocaine at the time of the crash. It is “unknown at this time” if those are the only narcotics that caused the blood test to turn up positive, says an LAPD spokesperson.

It was reported on August 12 that Heche ultimately died from injuries sustained from her Friday car crash; she was just 53. Eyewitnesses and doorbell cameras saw her driving her blue Mini Cooper at high speeds before crashing into the home of Lynne Mishele, who suffered injuries from debris and smoke inhalation. As a result, it was reported Thursday that Heche was under investigation for felony DUI charges. For a car crash to be a felony, it has to cause injury to others.

The LAPD issued a statement on Thursday, when Heche was still “in extreme critical condition.” The statement further stressed that the investigation was “in the process of gathering additional evidence; to include final toxicology results, and medical records from both parties involved.” There was “no definite direction of which prosecutorial office will be presented with this case until all appropriate and necessary evidence has been gathered accordingly.”

The crash caused a severe anoxic brain injury; this is caused by a complete lack of oxygen to the brain. By Thursday, her family announced that Heche was “not expected to survive.” The next morning, a week after the fatal collision, Heche was officially declared brain dead. She had been kept on life support to see if her situation might change or if her organs would be viable to donate since it had “long been her choice to donate her organs,” her family said.

Heche has claimed that, growing up, she was abused by her own father, who died in ’83. It is reportedly this trauma that haunted Heche even through her ascension into stardom. It was from this trauma that she used drugs and alcohol to escape.
