Anne Heche's son, Homer Laffoon, shares a statement

Following a gruesome car crash earlier this month, actress Anne Heche suffered a “severe”  brain injury, fell into a coma and a week later was taken off life support. Heche’s son Homer Laffoon has now spoken out in a statement shared to PEOPLE.

Homer, who is in his early twenties, is Heche’s oldest son with Coleman “Coley” Laffoon. His siblings are Atlas. In his statement, Homer shines a light on the emotionally tumultuous week his family went through after the crash and his hopes for his mother after her passing.

After Heche’s family decided on Friday to take her off life support, waiting only to see if her organs can be donated, Homer spoke about the loss he and his brother suffered. “My brother Atlas and I lost our Mom,” he began. “After six days of almost unbelievable emotional swings, I am left with a deep, wordless sadness. Hopefully, my mom is free from pain and beginning to explore what I like to imagine as her eternal freedom.”

His statement continued, “Over those six days, thousands of friends, family, and fans made their hearts known to me. I am grateful for their love, as I am for the support of my Dad, Coley, and my stepmom Alexi who continue to be my rock during this time. Rest In Peace Mom, I love you.”

Heche shares an extended family from multiple marriages. In 1997, she dated Ellen DeGeneres and the two stayed together until 2000. She was with Laffoon, Homer’s father, from 2001 to 2009. Then she was with actor James Tupper from 2007 to 2018, during which time they had Atlas, who is now 13. Sadly, grief is a familiar pain for Heche’s family.

Heche was one of five children; of those, three others also died. First was Heche’s estranged sister Susan who died from brain cancer in 2006. Cynthia was just two months old when she died of a heart defect. Nathan died at the age of 18 – also from a car crash. Heche herself reportedly had a troubled life haunted by alleged abuse by her father, and drug use. In addition to Homer, Laffoon also shared words honoring Heche. He said, “I loved her and I miss her, and I’m always going to,” adding that “She was brave and fearless, loved really hard.” Hopefully, those who remain may find peace, along with their loved ones who passed, just as Homer wished.
