If someone saved your life, you’d remember them, right? But could the same be said for a young puppy? This little dog’s rescuer was about to find out. As he opened the door, he hoped for some form of recognition… and what happened next was beautiful. In 2013 a story came out of Nova Scotia, Canada, concerning a poor puppy called Mojo. The American Staffordshire terrier/pit bull crossbreed had been destined for a sinister and violent future. To be specific, he was to be used as a bait dog. Indeed, the creatures are usually pitted against some kind of chained wild animal in the name of entertainment. And not only is the practice extremely abusive, but it is also illegal in both the U.S. and Canada. Facebook/Hope For Mojo That was assuming, however, that Mojo even made it to adulthood. After all, the degree of neglect he had suffered was so extreme that it was unlikely he would have lived that long. The puppy had, in fact, already contracted a health condition that had gone untreated and nearly claimed his life. Facebook/Hope For Mojo More precisely, Mojo had developed a skin problem called Demodicosis, or demodectic mange. The illness is caused by mites, and although most dogs have them, they seldom cause serious problems. In rare cases, however, they can cause a severe reaction in their host. Facebook/Hope For Mojo Especially if their host happens to be a young puppy with a low immune system like Mojo. His condition became so bad that he lost all of his hair, and his exposed skin was covered in sores. Mojo’s rescuer later told The Dodo that the dog’s “whole body was a complete scab.” Facebook/Hope For Mojo The mange was so bad, in fact, that it very nearly ended Mojo’s life. Fortunately, around that time, he was rescued by a kindly soul by the name of Joey Wagner. As it would happen, Wagner had some experience in caring for animals. Facebook/Hope For Mojo Indeed, Wagner helped found Nova Scotia’s Baie Ste. Marie Animal Society (BSMAS), a non-profit animal rescue group. As a result, he was in a position to help Mojo, and the puppy came under the protection of BSMAS. Wagner had reached Mojo just in time. Facebook/Hope For Mojo However, at that point, Mojo’s life expectancy could be measured in mere hours. In addition to his potentially lethal case of mange, the puppy was also in drastic need of food and water. Indeed, Mojo’s health was so bad that he was taken to a clinic for emergency care. Facebook/Hope For Mojo “The look gave me, I knew that he wanted to live,” Wagner told CBC News in February 2013. “So, we did everything we could.” The pup was taken to the Atlantic Veterinary College, under the care of Doctor Tracy Matthews. And Mojo refused to give up. Facebook/Hope For Mojo “He’s been doing really well,” Matthews said after Mojo had received a week of treatment. “It’s just like in human medicine. A lot of it comes down to the will of the patient to get better and he certainly has that in spades.” Facebook/Hope For Mojo “We know that he’s going to have a long recovery ahead of him. He will definitely be needing more meds and more care,” Wagner added. However, one thing Mojo didn’t have to look hard for was a forever home; adoption requests were plentiful. Facebook/Hope For Mojo “He filled the hearts of so many people with love, hope, and forgiveness,” stated a post on the Facebook group Hope For Mojo. The plucky little pup had plenty of fans, but Mojo’s chronic health problems meant that Wagner couldn’t consider their kind offers. As it turned out, that wasn’t such a problem. Facebook/Hope For Mojo In fact, Wagner and his wife Leta had already fallen for Mojo’s charms. As a result, they planned to adopt the pup themselves. And then the time came for Wagner to reunite with his future pet. But would Mojo, who was only three months old when he was rescued, remember him? Facebook/Hope For Mojo The answer was a resounding “Yes!” With a little assistance from the vet, Mojo climbed unsteadily to his feet to greet his old friend. Footage of the reunion was later uploaded to YouTube, and throughout the whole encounter, Mojo’s little tail didn’t stop thumping. Facebook/Hope For Mojo The pupper’s appreciation was enough to reduce grown men to tears. Mojo didn’t just find the strength to waddle over to Wagner and shower him with kisses. He also attempted to climb into the man’s arms to be closer to his rescuer. Facebook/Hope For Mojo Even when Wagner picked up the little puppy to hold him, Mojo could still hardly contain his excitement! He couldn’t stop himself from planting his paws all over his new owner’s face. It would seem that he never wanted to let Wagner go ever again. Facebook/Hope For Mojo Luckily, he would never have to. Wagner adopted Mojo into his loving family, and they have been together ever since. “Today, Mojo is very healthy,” a Hope For Mojo update reported. “ though his fur never fully returned, he lives a very happy life with the Wagners and his new brothers.” Facebook/Hope For Mojo The Facebook group also stated that Mojo is doing his part to help other abused animals, too. “He continues to bring awareness to animal abuse,” another update explained. “Mojo has his own products that he sells to keep raising money for Baie Ste. Marie Animal Society.” Facebook/Hope For Mojo But that wasn’t all. The update continued, “With the financial support and donations , they have nearly reached completion of extra building needed to house and treat abandoned, neglected and abused animals.
