While rain hammered down outside, John and his parents decided to clear out some unwanted items from John's grandfather's attic. This seemingly mundane task turned out to be a big adventure for John as he came across, quite dramatically, an old wooden chest. The mystery was made complete with a logo and an inscription. His grandfather fought in the Pacific theater during WW2. Exploring further, John found something interesting scribbled onto the chest. Turns out, the word had something to do with natural gas, connecting it back to the front logo of a medical red cross. ASexualWalrus/Imgur But, the year on the chest was 1932, and US did not enter the war until 1940. John recounted his story on the internet and a lot of theories sprang as to where that chest might be coming from. ASexualWalrus/Imgur John finally had the truth. The chest was a Japan’s Showa Era replica. It was the time between 1926-89 when Japan was ruled by Emperor Hirohito. It was a medical kit designed to be air and water proof. That sounded great to John as the contents inside would remain in perfect condition even after all these years. ASexualWalrus/Imgur The medical kit, when opened, revealed piles and piles of pills and medicinal bottles with Japanese labels. ASexualWalrus/Imgur Once he knew what the chest contained, John took a dangerous move. He decided to test the vitality of those medicines. ASexualWalrus/Imgur It all went well and John discovered several different kinds of medicines. He first put a purple liquid to test. It was sugar water intended to raise sugar levels. Other bottles contained pain relievers and caffeine to, of course, give a kick to the brain as well as to decrease inflammation. Quite a handy chest! ASexualWalrus/Imgur Bottles after that contained dangerous substances that John did not really put to test. There were ones with hypnotizing powers to alleviate anxiety, others for use during amputations or bullet removals. ASexualWalrus/Imgur Apart from the medicines, the chest contained other handy items like a flashlight that was bathed in acid already, 2 kerosene bottles, and a medical mask. ASexualWalrus/Imgur John found a host of other items which he kept exploring. Now that the hype around the chest was dying online, John was pretty much by himself to figure things out. In his process of discovery, John once again chanced upon something interesting. ASexualWalrus/Imgur There was a brief note in Japanese language that read adrenaline, novocaine, atropine when translated. The last of the trio causes serious hallucinations and its place in the chest is a mystery in itself. ASexualWalrus/Imgur Now it was time to know how much this valuable discovery was worth. To John's immense disappointment, not really that much. The chest, after all these years, may be a relic of the past, but one that nobody would excitedly want to own.
