by Ruth A

Published May 18, 2026

Long-lasting Hollywood marriages are rare, but Sam Elliott and Katharine Ross continue proving that some celebrity relationships can truly stand the test of time. The beloved actors have now spent more than four decades together, becoming one of the entertainment industry’s most admired couples.

Both stars already enjoyed successful acting careers before they officially became a couple. Elliott built his reputation through rugged cowboy and western roles, while Ross became famous through classic films such as The Graduate and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.

According to Country Living, the actors first truly connected in 1978 while filming the horror movie The Legacy in London. Although Elliott had briefly appeared in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid years earlier, he admitted he never approached Ross during production because she already felt like a major Hollywood star.

Sam Elliott and Katharine Ross eventually grew closer while working together on The Legacy, where they played a couple trapped inside a mysterious English estate. Ross later joked that she found herself drawn to everything about Elliott, including his famous voice, rugged appearance, and signature mustache. At the time, Ross had already experienced four previous marriages, while Elliott had never married before. After Ross divorced her fourth husband in 1979, the couple continued building their relationship and eventually married in 1984.

Later that same year, the couple welcomed their daughter, Cleo Rose, who eventually pursued a career in music. Around that period, Elliott also landed one of the most important roles of his career in the film Mask opposite Cher. Sam Elliott and Katharine Ross remained supportive of each other’s careers throughout the years while balancing family life away from constant Hollywood attention. The couple later reunited onscreen again in 2017 when they appeared together in The Hero, where Ross portrayed the ex-wife of Elliott’s aging western actor character.

The actors now divide their time between homes in California and Oregon while continuing to work occasionally in film and television. Elliott once explained that lasting relationships require effort and commitment, adding that couples must work through difficult moments together rather than walking away when challenges appear.
