Since the beginning of Donald Trump’s presidential administration, several celebrities, including Ellen DeGeneres, Miley Cyrus, and Chelsea Handler, have left the US for other countries. Some of them cited political disagreements, personal safety concerns, or a desire for a fresh start elsewhere.
Now, Rosie O’Donnell has joined the league. The former talk show host recently revealed on Tiktok that she has moved to Ireland with her 12-year-old child, Clay. However, her case is quite different because, unlike others, Trump didn’t ignore her exit. He fired back with a sharp response.
Why did Rosie O’Donnell leave the US?

The comedian announced that she left the US on January 15, just five days before Trump’s inauguration, which suggested that she went due to political issues just like the other celebrities. However, O’Donnell also mentioned that she left the US due to her concerns over LGBTQ+ issues. She emphasized that Ireland’s progressive stance on these matters made her feel more secure.
Fortunately, with her Irish grandparents, she was eligible to apply for citizenship. O’Donnell has described her experience in Ireland as “wonderful.” She mentioned that despite missing her close friends and other children, she still finds peace in Ireland. She praised the people there for their kindness and warmth. She finally added that she might return one day, but only when all citizens have equal rights. However, for now, she believes prioritizing her and her child’s well-being is the most important thing.
Donald Trump responds with a clapback
During a White House meeting with Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin, President Donald Trump was asked about Rosie O’Donnell’s recent move to Ireland. A reporter asked, “Why in the world would you let Rosie O’Donnell move to Ireland? Before Martin could respond, Trump interjected, stating, “I like that question. Do you know you have Rosie O’Donnell? Do you know who she is? You’re better off not knowing.”
O’Donnell and Trump have been at odds since 2006, exchanging public insults over the years. Their rivalry worsened when she openly opposed his presidency. She even called him “mentally unstable” on multiple occasions. It looks like their rivalry is not ending anytime soon.
