In an appearance on the March 11 episode of the MeSsy podcast hosted by Christina Applegate and Jamie-Lynn Sigler, Sagal opened up about her struggles with substance abuse, revealing that she began drinking and using drugs as a teenager. She explained that she picked up the habit as a way to avoid facing traumatic experiences such as the loss of her parents and a cancer diagnosis in her 20s.
She admitted that she was responsible for the destruction of her opportunities in the industry, acknowledging that showing up to work under the influence of alcohol and drugs was one of the factors that ended her career even before it started. Despite the setbacks, Sagal eventually found her footing again, releasing two albums, Well and Room and also contributed to the soundtrack of Sons of Anarchy.
Katey Sagal plans to keep her children away from substance abuse
Sagal shared that her journey to recovery would not have been possible without a community, which played a very crucial role in helping her overcome her alcoholism. She explained how being surrounded by people who had faced similar challenges gave her the strength and inspiration to confront her demons head-on.
Taking a hint from her own experience, the actress is deeply committed to ensuring that her children, most especially her youngest daughter Esme, are aware of the ill effects of drug and alcohol abuse. As the 18-year-old prepares to start college, Sagal revealed that she has taken a proactive and rather unconventional approach to address the topic. Instead of allowing her daughter to come in contact with alcohol for the first time in an uncontrolled environment, she has decided to introduce it to her under thorough supervision.
