While the San Francisco 49ers and the Kansas City Chiefs fought for victory on the field, advertisers were putting their best foot forward with commercials many look forward to as much as the game. One of them was a first deep look at the trailer for Twisters, a sequel to 1996’s Twister. Opinions are mixed regarding this new entry, but fans can agree on one thing: seeing this trailer has viewers missing the late Bill Paxton and Philip Seymour Hoffman.
Twisters is an upcoming disaster film directed by Lee Isaac Chang and starring Glen Powell, Daisy Edgar-Jones, Brandon Perea, Anthony Ramos, and Maura Tierney. It acts as a standalone sequel to Twister, which starred Paxton and Hoffman along with Helen Hunt and Jami Gertz, following teams of storm chasers with clashing views. Here’s what to expect and how fans of the original are feeling after Universal Pictures dropped this new trailer on Sunday.
‘Twisters’ has fans feeling nostalgic for the lost stars from ‘Twister’ 1996
Twister fans were treated to nearly two minutes of footage from the upcoming Twisters, let by a star-studded cast that sees a former storm chaser still haunted by a tornado incident in the distant past – a past that seems intent on stampeding into the present.

But she is drawn into testing out a new tracking system, aided by allies played by Glen Powell and Anthony Ramos. But the storms are at their most untameable as this team tries to understand the sometimes incomprehensible nature of storm systems, and more than research data is on the line working in the heart of the tempest.
On the official Universal Pictures YouTube page, the Twisters trailer accumulated roughly 4 million views in under 24 hours, and the replies are flooded with nostalgia. Many have shared memories of the unique spectacle the 1996 film provided, as well as the awe-filled memories of getting the VHS. Can this sequel measure up, or was it doomed to be blown away by its predecessor?
‘Twister’ had many iconic elements fans miss, but ‘Twister’ is promising strengths of its own
On top of these fond memories, Twister was the first movie to be commercially released on DVD in the United States. For many, Twister was a formative rite of passage, their first DVD as it was the country’s first DVD – and what a memorable film was stored on that disc! Some of the elements most frequently referenced in the comments include Paxton and Hoffman’s performances, as well as the flying cow, the lively Aunt Meg and her breakfast, the hush that falls after hearing of F-5 tornadoes, and Helen Hunt as well as her character’s backstory. Hoffman died on February 2, 2014, at the age of 46, while Paxton died on February 25, 2017, at the age of 61.
Those are big shoes to fill – but Twisters might just be the disaster film to fill them. So far, fans are ready to be hopeful and hear what Chung has to say.
“What made the first Twister great was memorable characters and the great chemistry between them,” mused one comment. “I hope this movie can bring some of that too.”
“I love how the tornadoes have the vibes of creatures or giant monsters,” another noted. A different commenter reminisced, “I don’t think I even know how many times I have watched Twister as a kid. I am looking forward to this one.” Similarly, one shared, “Twister was the very first movie my mom took me to see in theaters as a child. She was looking forward to the sequel but sadly passed away last year. It’s going to be hard seeing this without her.” But see it they plan to.
Will you be watching Twisters when it hits theaters on July 19?
