The death of Ray Liotta on May 26 left family, friends, and fans alike grieving from the loss. While many celebrities have come out honoring Liotta’s contribution to the industry, colleagues have given an unprecedented look at what it was like working with him. Recently, Sigourney Weaver opened up about the nature of Liotta’s character when the two worked together.
Though just one of Liotta’s biggest claims to fame comes from Goodfellas, Something Wild, and even ER, 2001 saw him starring alongside Weaver in a romantic crime comedy that earned Weaver a Satellite Award nomination. The two played love interests, but according to Weaver, Liotta was simply lovely to work with.

In a statement to PEOPLE, Weaver reflected on her time with Liotta while filming Heartbreakers. “Loaded with charm and physical ease, Ray was a natural in comedy and just a doll to work with,” the Alien film star shared. “We had such a good time.” She also called him, “A true original and a lovely guy, gone much too soon.”

Additionally, in a movie all about cons, love and loss, Weaver says, “Ray’s lovesick gangster, Dean, is the real heartbreaker in Heartbreakers.” She further feels that while Liotta “may not be known primarily for his comic chops,” the Many Saints of Newark star “brought impeccable timing and wit to everything he did.”
Many reeling and grieving
Liotta’s death was confirmed by a representative of Liotta, who died in his sleep while in the Dominican Republic. There, he had been filming his latest project, Dangerous Waters, a thriller about a sailing vacation that turns into a nightmare when a young woman unearths some dark secrets. Liotta had been in the industry for over four decades, leaving behind a lot of memories for audiences and his peers.
Indeed, Weaver is just one of several other former co-stars sharing memories of the late Liotta. On Thursday, Goodfellas director Martin Scorsese called Liotta, “uniquely gifted, so adventurous, so courageous as an actor.” Liotta’s fiance, Jacy Nittolo, called life with the actor “nothing but truly magical” and said, “We laughed daily and we were inseparable. The chemistry was wild in the best way.”
