The couple had met when she was just 13 years old at the wedding of his cousin, Princess Marina of Greece. Her Majesty famously saved up ration cards to purchase the material needed. The gown was made of ivory duchess satin and decorated with 10,000 imported white pearls, silver thread and tulle embroidery. Her bridal ensemble also included a 15-foot patterned full court train attached at the shoulders, and a silk tulle veil held in place by a tiara lent to the princess by her mother. 2. Jacqueline Kennedy Jacqueline Kennedy wore a full-skirted dress by New York designer Ann Lowe when she married John F Kennedy at Hammersmith Farm in Newport, Rhode Island, in September 1953. She completed her look with little white gloves and a full veil. Kennedy went on to become President of the United States. He was assassinated in Dallas, Texas, in November 1963. Jacqueline then married Greek shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis in 1968, becoming known as Jackie O. 3. Grace Kelly The dress that Grace Kelly wore for her April 19 1956 wedding to Prince Rainier was designed by MGM costume designer Helen Rose and was made from 25 yards of silk taffeta, antique rose-point lace and pearls by three dozen seamstresses, who worked on it for six weeks. 4. Elizabeth Taylor The first of Elizabeth Taylor’s seven husbands was Conrad “Nicky” Hilton. They were married in Beverly Hills in May 1950 and Liz wore a dress by Helen Rose – the MGM costumier who designed Grace Kelly’s wedding gown. The dress bore a striking resemblance to the one Taylor wore in Father of the Bride, the costumes of which were also created by Rose. The marriage ended in divorce after just nine months. 6. Elizabeth Taylor (Again) In 1952, when Elizabeth Taylor married her second husband – English actor Michael Wilding – divorce was not as accepted as it is today. As such, she wore a demure, three-quarter sleeve, ballerina-length dress with a matching jacket for the London ceremony rather than a traditional white dress. Wilding and Taylor were married for almost five years and had two sons – Michael and Christopher – together. 7. Elizabeth Taylor (And Again) In May 1959, when Elizabeth Taylor married her fourth husband, singer Eddie Fisher - who left his wife Debbie Reynolds to marry Taylor – she wore a short, hooded, forest green dress with matching shoes and a bouquet made up of orchids and baby's breath. Taylor’s third husband, producer Mike Todd – with whom she had a daughter, Liza – had died in a plane crash in March 1958. Following her divorce from Fisher, Liz went on to marry (and divorce) Richard Burton twice before two further marriages – to politician John Warner from 1976 to 1982 and to construction worker Larry Fortensky (whom she met in rehab), from 1991 to 1996. 8. Audrey Hepburn Audrey Hepburn married actor Mel Ferrer in September 1954, after starring with him on Broadway in the play Ondine. She wore a typically full-skirted Fifties ballerina-length style by Pierre Balmain with roses in her hair. Their marriage lasted 14 years, until December 1968, and Audrey went on to wed Italian psychiatrist Andrea Dotti in 1969. 9.Yoko Ono For her March 1969 wedding to John Lennon, Yoko Ono wore a white minidress – accessorised with a sun hat and over-sized sunglasses. Zsa Zsa Gabor cuttingly described the couple as looking like “two people going to hold up a bank". 10. Raquel Welch For her second marriage (she was married to James Welch from 1959 to 1964), Raquel Welch wore a crochet dress for her February 1967 Paris wedding to Hollywood producer Patrick Curtis. Diana, Princess of Wales Diana, Princess of Wales, wore a dress designed by David and Elizabeth Emanuel for her July 1981 wedding to Prince Charles. Tierney and Cassini later eloped to Las Vegas to be married. They had two daughters together – Antonia and Christina – before they divorced in 1953. 16. Princess Margaret Princess Margaret wore a white silk gown by Norman Hartnell – the same designer behind Queen Elizabeth’s dress - and a diamond tiara when she married Antony Armstrong Jones in 1960. Their marriage lasted until 1978. 17. Wallis Simpson Edward VIII abdicated his throne in December 1936 in order to marry Wallis Simpson. They wed in June 1937 at the Château de Candé in France. Bianca Jagger Bianca Jagger decided against a traditional wedding dress for her May 1971 wedding to Mick Jagger, opting instead for a white skirt suit by Savile Row tailor Tommy Nutter - who had previously designed suits for the Rolling Stones, Elton John and Yoko Ono. The designer had made a shirt for Bianca to wear under the jacket but it did not fit as she was four-months pregnant - so she wore nothing underneath instead. Jerry Hall Jerry Hall also eschewed wearing white for her 1990 wedding to Mick Jagger in Bali, opting instead for traditional Balinese dress for the unofficial Balinese ceremony - a largely of Hindu ritual. The couple had started dating in 1977 and their common-law marriage ended in 1999. Marilyn Monroe Marilyn Monroe married retired baseball player Joe DiMaggio in San Francisco in January 1954.
