For longtime “NCIS” fans, Leroy Jethro Gibbs is officially back in a much bigger way. After stepping away from the flagship series in season 19, Mark Harmon is returning in front of the camera for a full-time role in season 3 of “NCIS: Origins.”
According to ScreenRant, Harmon had already remained connected to the franchise as a producer and narrator on the prequel, which follows a younger Gibbs, played by Austin Stowell. Now, viewers will get to see the original Gibbs again as the series expands its story beyond narration and brief appearances.
Mark Harmon Returns to the Screen as Gibbs
CBS has released a first look at Harmon’s return in the season 3 premiere, titled “Don’t You Forget About Me.” The episode will find the older Gibbs still living in Alaska, where he retired after leaving his longtime NCIS team. This time, however, events from his past will pull him back into action.
The story will link present-day Gibbs to a case involving his younger self and Mike Franks’ team, giving Harmon a much larger role than narration alone. He previously made brief appearances in “NCIS: Origins,” but season 3 marks his biggest on-screen return since leaving “NCIS,” where Gary Cole’s Alden Parker later took over the team.
Gibbs Has Remained at the Heart of the ‘NCIS’ Franchise
Even after leaving “NCIS,” Harmon never completely walked away from the character. His narration helped anchor “NCIS: Origins,” giving the prequel a direct connection to the Gibbs audiences already knew. The series explores his earlier years in the agency while showing how the experiences of his youth shaped the man viewers eventually met on the original show. Season 3 will also bring back familiar figures from Gibbs’ past, including Ducky and Victoria Mallard. The season will consist of 10 episodes rather than the usual 18, making Harmon’s full-season presence even more significant.
For fans, the return of Mark Harmon offers a rare chance to revisit Gibbs without simply repeating the original series. Instead, “NCIS: Origins” can connect two different stages of his life, using the older Gibbs to reflect on unfinished business from years earlier. After more than 20 years of “NCIS,” Gibbs remains one of the franchise’s defining characters.
