More than four decades after John Lennon’s tragic death, questions surrounding the legendary Beatles musician’s fortune continue to attract attention. Now, his youngest son, Sean Ono Lennon, is addressing longstanding claims about how much he and his older half-brother, Julian Lennon, received from their famous father.
According to Parade, the 51-year-old musician recently responded to a social media post suggesting that his brother received a significantly smaller inheritance following their father’s death in 1980. His unexpected clarification came shortly after the siblings shared a heartwarming birthday moment, offering another glimpse into their relationship and the family history that has followed them throughout their lives.
Sean Ono Lennon Addresses Claims About His Father’s Inheritance
One guy abandoned by his famous Dad, the other embraced and closely attended to by the same Dad, whom he then saw murdered as a young child.
One guy inherited most of the estate, the other largely cut out and forced to engaged in decadeslong litigation in pursuit of a comparatively small share of it.
Unbearably painful and enraging for the one, surely pretty darn awkward for the other.
That they remain friends (and largely always were) is testimony to the redemptive power of being a chill dude with broad implications for the wider world.

On October 12, Sean responded to writer Wesley Yang on X after Yang questioned how the late Beatles star’s estate was divided between his sons. The post suggested that Julian, whom Lennon shared with his first wife, Cynthia Lennon, had been largely excluded from the inheritance and spent years pursuing a smaller share through legal proceedings. Sean challenged that account, explaining that both brothers ultimately received comparable amounts. “Julian and I inherited the same amount from our dad. Our trusts were equal,” he wrote, adding that Julian’s share was slightly larger, although the difference was negligible.
The exchange followed a photograph Sean shared on October 10 showing himself spending time outdoors with Julian. The younger musician celebrated their reunion with a cheerful birthday caption, highlighting their close relationship. Sean was born on October 9, 1975, sharing a birthday with his famous father, who would have turned 86 this year. The brothers’ family history has attracted public curiosity for decades, particularly because they experienced very different childhoods before their father’s murder in December 1980.
Remembering the Lennon Brothers’ Family Bond and Musical Legacy

Julian was 17 when his father died, while Sean was just five years old. Following the former Beatles star’s death, questions emerged about the distribution of his estate, eventually leading to a lengthy legal dispute involving Julian and Yoko Ono, Sean’s mother. Although the inheritance controversy has resurfaced repeatedly over the years, the younger brother has maintained that their personal relationship has never reflected the tensions often described in public discussions. Both musicians have also followed their father’s creative footsteps, developing careers of their own while carrying the unmistakable Lennon family name.

In a 2025 interview with Vanity Fair, Sean spoke warmly about the older brother who helped inspire his interest in music. He recalled admiring Julian during childhood and learning to play guitar from him. Julian found early success with his 1984 debut album, Valotte, while Sean later explored his own musical identity through solo projects and collaborations. Despite persistent speculation about a family feud, Sean has repeatedly emphasized their closeness and affection for each other. His latest comments offer another perspective on a complicated family history, reminding longtime Beatles fans that the bond between John Lennon’s sons extends beyond questions about money and inheritance.
