The stars honor Sir Patrick Stewart

The entertainment world is mourning the loss of Sir Patrick Stewart, the beloved British actor whose extraordinary career brought him from the Shakespearean stage to the captain’s chair of the USS Enterprise. Stewart died on October 28 at his Los Angeles home at the age of 86, following what his family described as a “brief and poignant journey” with Alzheimer’s disease and Lewy body dementia.

Following the announcement of his death on Thursday, October 29, tributes poured in from friends and former co-stars, including William Shatner, Hugh Jackman, and members of the Star Trek family. Among the most touching was a heartfelt remembrance from Sir Ian McKellen, Stewart’s longtime friend and X-Men co-star, who reflected on their decades-long friendship and a piece of advice he once gave Stewart that could have changed television history.

Ian McKellen Remembers His Beloved Friend

SIR PATRICK STEWART (1940-2026) Before everything else, Patrick was defined by being born and bred in Yorkshire, the proud county in the north of England which he loved to the end. You could hear it in his accented voice and in the stern honesty with which he told you what he thought and felt. Yorkshiremen have no truck with half-truths or avoidance of big issues. He wore his heart on his sleeve, which made him a man to rely on, to admire and in my case, love. We first met as ambitious young actors with the Royal Shakespeare Company half a century ago but we weren’t in the same productions. My first strong memory was a few years later, meeting him in the street in central London when he told me about an offer to take over a leading part in ‘Star Trek’. “But Patrick think of your stage career in the UK. Do you really want to risk—getting lost in Hollywood for years and years?”. Well, he took the risk and thank goodness for us all that he did for not just his devoted Trekkies but film and theatre audiences, who marvelled at his using international celebrity to star in a string of cinema successes (‘X-Men’ of course) and in great classical plays by Shakespeare, Ibsen, Arthur Miller, Peter Shaffer, Pinter and Beckett at Stratford-upon-Avon, in London’s West End and on Broadway. America was his adopted home, where he met his adored Sunny who has cared for him through sickness and health, through thick and thin. But he never forsook his origins: and the proudest achievement of the most respected and beloved actor of his generation on either side of the Atlantic, was his appointment as Chancellor of Huddersfield University in Yorkshire. McKellen, 87, shared an emotional tribute on Instagram, remembering Stewart as a fiercely proud Yorkshireman whose honesty and warmth made him someone others could always depend on. The two actors first crossed paths while working with the Royal Shakespeare Company in the 1970s, beginning an association that would eventually blossom into one of Hollywood’s most cherished friendships.

“He wore his heart on his sleeve, which made him a man to rely on, to admire and in my case, love,” McKellen wrote, according to People.

McKellen also recalled an encounter in London when Stewart revealed that he had been offered a leading role in a new Star Trek television series. Concerned about what such a commitment might mean for his friend’s theatrical career, McKellen advised him to reconsider.

Fortunately, Stewart didn’t take that advice. His portrayal of Captain Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek: The Next Generation made him an international star, opening the door to an extraordinary second chapter of his career. McKellen later joined him in the X-Men films, where their portrayals of Magneto and Professor Charles Xavier introduced both actors to another generation of moviegoers.

The friends also reunited onstage in productions of Waiting for Godot and No Man’s Land. Away from the spotlight, their playful friendship became famous through countless photographs, interviews, and public appearances.

In his remembrance, McKellen celebrated Stewart’s ability to remain committed to the theater despite his Hollywood success, calling him one of the most respected and beloved actors of his generation.

Hugh Jackman And The X-Men Family Pay Tribute

We lost one of the greats of stage and screen today. And, in my book, a tremendous friend and man. I learned so much from him. I will miss you, Patrick Stewart, all of my days. @mang0ld https://t.co/Ky6iv2MUek

Another emotional remembrance came from Hugh Jackman, who starred alongside Stewart as Wolverine in the X-Men franchise. The two appeared together in several films, including the acclaimed 2017 movie Logan, which brought their characters’ longtime relationship to an emotional conclusion.

Jackman shared photographs of himself with Stewart on Instagram and wrote, “We lost one of the greats of stage and screen today. And, in my book, a tremendous friend and man.”

“I learned so much from him. I will miss you, Patrick Stewart, all of my days,” he added, according to The Associated Press.

Marvel Studios also released a statement honoring Stewart’s portrayal of Professor Charles Xavier, a role he first played in 2000. The studio praised the actor’s intelligence, grace, and humanity, describing him as a generous collaborator whose performances helped define the character for generations of fans.

The role will also feature in Avengers: Doomsday, scheduled for release in December 2026, marking one of Stewart’s final screen appearances.

William Shatner And Star Trek Stars Say Goodbye To Their Captain

What a heartbreaking week it has been. Sir Patrick Stewart was a friend, a colleague, and a magnificent actor. From the stage to the bridge of the Enterprise, he brought intelligence, grace, and a deep sense of humanity to everything he did. Captain Picard stood for the best of us, and so did the man who played him. I was filled with affection and admiration for him and his work. My heart goes out to Sunny and his family. He will be deeply missed.

The loss was particularly painful for the Star Trek community, where Stewart had been a beloved figure for nearly four decades. William Shatner, who portrayed Captain James T. Kirk in the original Star Trek series, shared a moving tribute on social media.

“What a heartbreaking week it has been,” Shatner began, referring to the recent death of fellow Star Trek actor Walter Koenig.

“Sir Patrick Stewart was a friend, a colleague, and a magnificent actor,” he continued. “From the stage to the bridge of the Enterprise, he brought intelligence, grace, and a deep sense of humanity to everything he did.”

Shatner also praised Stewart’s portrayal of Captain Picard, saying the character represented humanity at its best, just as the actor himself did. The two legendary captains famously shared the screen in the 1994 film Star Trek Generations.

💖 George Takei remembers Sir Patrick Stewart 🖖 “Fans across the world mourn the passing of a true and irreplaceable legend. As Captain Jean-Luc Picard, Patrick Stewart took the starship Enterprise to places it had never gone before, and he inspired a whole next generation of star-gazers who looked longingly ahead to a brighter future for all humanity. Our hearts are heavy, indeed. Rest in the heavens, Captain.” #StarTrek

George Takei, who played Hikaru Sulu in the original series, remembered Stewart for inspiring generations of viewers to imagine a brighter future. In a message shared on social media, he honored the late actor as an irreplaceable legend before offering a final farewell: “Rest in the heavens, Captain.”

Stewart’s Star Trek: The Next Generation colleagues also expressed their grief. Jonathan Frakes, who played Commander William Riker alongside Stewart for seven seasons, reposted the announcement of his friend’s death to his Instagram Story, adding the simple message, “Rest in peace my friend.”

Wil Wheaton, who portrayed Wesley Crusher, shared a photograph of himself with Stewart accompanied by just two words: “Godspeed, Captain.”

For millions of fans, Stewart will forever be remembered as the commanding and compassionate Captain Picard. For those who knew him personally, the tributes reveal something equally meaningful: a generous colleague, a devoted friend, and a man whose kindness left an impression far beyond the characters he brought to life.
