Joey Chestnut, the face of competitive eating, has confirmed he’s returning to the Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest this Fourth of July. He was absent from last year’s contest due to a sponsorship conflict, but this year, Joey Chestnut is making a big return.
The 16-time champion announced on Monday, calling the event a “cherished tradition” and saying he’s thrilled to return to what he calls one of the highlights of his year.

Last year, Chestnut sat out the contest because of a disagreement with Major League Eating over his deal with Impossible Foods, a company that makes plant-based hot dogs. While some people questioned if the clash meant a permanent break, Joey made it clear that his love for the July 4th tradition never wavered.
And now, he’s making it known that supporting plant-based options doesn’t mean he has left the world of hot dogs behind. “I’m excited to be back on the Coney Island stage, doing what I live to do,” he wrote.
All eyes are on Joey Chestnut for his comeback
Fans are excited, and the organizers behind the event are glad to have him in the lineup again, as Joey’s return has brought fresh energy to this year’s contest. Richard Shea, who heads Major League Eating, hinted that this year could be something special. With Joey on stage, people know they’re in for a real show.
Last year’s winners, Patrick Bertoletti and Miki Sudo, put on a show by eating 58 and 51 hot dogs, respectively. But with Chestnut holding the all-time record of 76 in 10 minutes (set in 2021), the spotlight is firmly back on him. The contest airs live from Coney Island on July 4th across ESPN platforms.
