Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, the eighth chapter in the action franchise. It kicked off its theatrical run over Memorial Day weekend with a strong $64 million debut, the best opening for the series so far.
But while the start was promising, the momentum quickly slowed. A sharp drop in its second weekend hinted that it might not be as smooth as expected, and now, weeks later, the movie finds itself in a race to keep climbing the box office ranks despite a few heavy hurdles in its path.
‘Mission Impossible – The Final Reckoning’ is not at the top yet, but it is making progress
Mission Impossible The Final Reckoning has surpassed 500 Million Dollars at the Global Box Office (506 Million to be precise). In North America, the film has earned 166 Million Dollars. The Final Reckoning has earned around $165.3 million in North America after four weekends in theaters. It is currently in the eighth spot in terms of domestic box office for the year and is moving closer to overtaking its direct predecessor, Dead Reckoning Part One, which brought in $172.6 million. The Final Reckoning is just over $7 million away from overtaking Dead Reckoning Part One at the box office.
If it manages that, there’s still another step ahead, about $8 million more, to move past the 1996 original and claim the fifth spot among the franchise’s top domestic earners. But to climb beyond that and catch up with Rogue Nation, it would require a surge of over $14 million, which seems unlikely this far into its run.
Tom Cruise is going all in for the movie, but the budget is too high
What is even more challenging is the film’s budget. Reports say The Final Reckoning cost around $400 million to produce, setting its break-even point between $800 million and $1 billion globally. That’s a tough mark to hit, especially with its current momentum.
This is a very steep hill to climb, especially given its current box office trajectory. Despite all of that, Tom Cruise continues to bring his signature commitment to the role by performing his stunts, including death-defying ones, and driving the narrative forward. But the truth is, even his star power may not be enough to balance out the film’s financial weight. At this point, it’s more a question of how far it can go before the momentum fades completely.
