At 76, most artists would be planning their final bow. But not Billy Joel. Even as he faces one of the toughest health challenges of his life, the man behind New York State of Mind and Piano Man still holds tight to the stage.
Billy Joel was recently diagnosed with normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH), a brain condition that affects balance, hearing, and vision. This led him to cancel all upcoming shows, with some extending into 2026. But make no mistake: this is a pause, not a farewell.

“He’s happiest while performing,” a close industry source shared. “Music is, has been, and will always be his life. He’s not ready to retire.” In a statement released May 23, Joel explained the cancellations were based on his doctors’ advice as he undergoes physical therapy. “I’m sincerely sorry to disappoint our audience,” he said. However, he is “thankful for the excellent care he is receiving and is fully committed to prioritizing his health. He is grateful for the support from fans during this time and looks forward to the day when he can once again take the stage.
The decision to go on a break followed a stage fall in February and ongoing medical concerns that led doctors to discover the build-up of fluid in his brain, a key symptom of NPH. While the diagnosis is serious, it’s also manageable, especially with early intervention and support.
Billy Joel is supported by family and friends
And support is something Joel has in abundance. His wife, Alexis, recently thanked fans for their “outpouring of love” in an Instagram post alongside their daughters, Della and Remy. “Bill is beloved by so many, and to us, he is a father and husband who is at the center of our world. We are hopeful for his recovery.”
Joel’s eldest daughter, Alexa Ray, echoed that sentiment. “We love you, and we got you, Pop,” she wrote in a heartfelt message, calling her father “the strongest and most resilient man I’ve ever known.”
