It’s not every day that a comedy legend worries a guest might die on stage. Lorne Michaels, the man behind Saturday Night Live, once had a moment like that with a Hollywood legend. Decades later, he shared the shocking memory with Jack Black, and it left both of them stunned.

In 1976, Desi Arnaz performed on Saturday Night Live. According to SNL creator Lorne Michaels, Arnaz was determined to give the audience everything he had, but things went awry.

At that time, Desi Arnaz, known around the world for I Love Lucy, was well past his prime in age but not in spirit. He was invited to host SNL in its very first season. Arnaz was in his 70s then, and according to Michaels, he insisted on doing a live version of “Babalú,” the high-energy drum-and-song act that made him famous as Ricky Ricardo. Even though Arnaz had performed the number countless times, this night was different. Lorne, watching from behind the scenes, couldn’t help but worry.

As the band played and Arnaz began to sing and drum, the energy in the studio was electric. But it didn’t take long for things to turn tense. Arnaz was pushing himself hard, determined to give a show-stopping performance. But Lorne noticed that Desi was struggling to breathe. His lips started to turn blue. That’s when Lorne made the quick call: Go to commercial.

Why did Lorne Michaels tell Jack Black this story in 2025?

Nearly 50 years later, Jack Black was backstage after rehearsals for his recent SNL hosting gig. Lorne pulled him aside and shared the Desi Arnaz story,  not just for laughs, but as a warning. Jack had just finished a wild routine filled with music, dance, and even a “tiger roll.” He was sweating, wheezing, and clearly giving it his all. That’s when Lorne told him, “Don’t go too hard. I’ve seen what happens when a performer pushes beyond their limit.”

Black joked about the moment on a podcast with David Spade and Dana Carvey, but even he admitted he wasn’t sure how to take it. Was Lorne actually worried he’d keel over during the show? Turns out, he kind of was. “He was just warning me,” Black said. “If I went full hard as a motherf–ker, I could die.”
