“Right on Time” is Kate Hudson’s way of appreciating her mother, Goldie Hawn, and the struggles that Hawn had endured prior to finding fame. The lyrics of the song tell the story of when Hawn, who is 79 now, rode through rough roads in a beat-up Cadillac to get to dance class.
Initially unsure of where the music was going, Hudson quickly became aware that the song was about her mother’s life. When she played it for her mother, Hawn was confused at first, but after learning that the song was about her childhood, she was touched.
Kate Hudson and her mother enjoy a close relationship
Hudson and her mother are very close, and they both cherish this greatly. Hudson believes one of her roles as a daughter is to carry on the family stories about her parents. Hudson talks about how inspiring Hawn’s life has been and how she remains humble despite all her accomplishments. Hudson grew up with her grandmother living in the house, something she believes kept her connected to her family’s past.
Now residing a mere seven blocks from her mother, Hudson sees Hawn nearly every day, still hearing the extravagant family stories that shaped her. Hudson reflects on the importance of maintaining generational ties and clinging to one’s familial past during an era when such customs seem to be vanishing.
