Van Morrison has spent more than six decades building one of the most enduring careers in popular music, but his childhood ambitions pointed in a very different direction. Van Morrison Once Wanted to Become a Veterinarian
Morrison has said that as a schoolboy, he wanted to become a veterinarian. The inspiration was simple: he had a dog, and his affection for the animal helped shape the idea. During his school years, however, one teacher seemed to recognize something different in him. Morrison later recalled that the teacher predicted he would become a singer, leaving the young student surprised by the suggestion.
Music was already woven into his childhood. His father owned an impressive record collection and regularly took him to local record shops, exposing him to artists who would later influence his sound. Morrison reportedly sang from a very young age, but he still did not initially see music as the obvious career waiting for him.
One Song Helped Change the Direction of His Life
Music eventually became impossible for Morrison to ignore. He credited hearing Lead Belly’s “Goodnight Irene,” with Sonny Terry on harmonica, as a defining moment. After success with Them, he launched his solo career in 1967 and recorded across seven decades, earning two Grammys. His 1974 album Veedon Fleece even featured him with two Irish Wolfhounds, a small nod to the animal-loving boy who once dreamed of veterinary work.
The story shows that legendary careers do not always begin with a clear plan. Morrison once imagined a quiet life caring for animals before music became his calling. That unexpected path turned him into one of his generation’s most distinctive voices, giving fans decades of enduring songs.
