After more than seven decades onstage, Gladys Knight is beginning a new chapter. The legendary singer announced that she plans to reduce her number of live performances as she shifts more of her attention toward family, personal projects, and the next phase of her life.
According to People, at 82, the “Midnight Train to Georgia” singer has spent most of her life entertaining audiences around the world. Her latest announcement does not mark a complete farewell to music, but it does signal a meaningful change for an artist whose voice has remained a constant presence across generations.
Gladys Knight Says She Is Ready for a New Era
Knight shared the news in an Instagram post on Aug. 27, explaining that she reached the decision after careful reflection. Rather than continuing at the same demanding pace, she plans to ease into fewer performances while spending more time working on projects with her husband, William McDowell, and visiting her grandchildren.

Knight also thanked fans for supporting her throughout more than 75 years in entertainment, calling her career the fulfillment of a childhood dream. Although she plans to slow down, she still hopes to see fans on the road. The announcement comes during her 2026 tour, following 2025’s Queens Tour with Chaka Khan, Patti LaBelle, and Stephanie Mills.
Family and Music Have Always Been Central to Her Life
Knight married McDowell in 2001 and has long maintained close ties to her large family. She is a mother and grandmother, and the couple’s extended family includes numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her decision to spend more time with them reflects a different kind of milestone after decades filled with recording sessions, tours, television appearances, and performances. Her career stretches back to childhood and later reached extraordinary heights through Gladys Knight & the Pips. Songs such as “Midnight Train to Georgia,” “Neither One of Us,” and “If I Were Your Woman” helped establish her as one of the most recognizable voices in soul and R&B.
Knight has also faced questions about her touring schedule. In 2025, her son Shanga Hankerson raised concerns about her workload, though Knight said she remained healthy and comfortable performing. Her latest announcement feels less like retirement and more like a choice to slow down, perform selectively, and spend more time with family.
