When Fuller House premiered on Netflix, longtime fans were excited to reunite with the Tanner family. However, one familiar face was noticeably missing. Michelle Tanner, originally portrayed by Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, never returned, leaving viewers wondering why the beloved twins chose not to join the reboot.
According to Parade, now Jodie Sweetin has shared new insight into that long-discussed decision. Rather than pointing to behind-the-scenes drama, she explained that the twins simply followed a different path after growing up in the spotlight. As a result, fans have a clearer understanding of why the sisters decided not to revisit one of television’s most iconic families.
Jodie Sweetin Explains The Olsen Twins’ Choice

Speaking on the Comics & Kicks podcast, Sweetin said there were never any hard feelings between the cast and Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen. Although everyone hoped they might return, the actresses chose to remain focused on the lives they had built outside of acting.

Sweetin explained that the twins experienced Full House very differently from the rest of the cast because they started acting before their first birthday. While the older actors remember watching them grow up on set, the sisters spent nearly their entire childhood in front of cameras. Consequently, they eventually decided to step away from Hollywood and pursue careers that better reflected their interests.
Why ‘Fuller House’ Moved Forward Without Michelle
After retiring from acting, Mary-Kate and Ashley found success in the fashion industry by building the luxury brand The Row. According to Sweetin, they no longer wanted the attention that came with being public figures after spending so many years in the spotlight. Instead, they chose a quieter life centered on fashion and business.

Even so, Fuller House still found a clever way to acknowledge Michelle’s absence. The reboot joked that she was living in New York while running a successful fashion empire, a playful reference to the twins’ real-life careers. The cast even looked directly into the camera, creating one of the show’s most memorable moments. Ultimately, Fuller House respected the sisters’ decision while giving fans a lighthearted explanation for Michelle’s absence. Sweetin’s comments also reinforce that the cast remains supportive of the Olsen twins and appreciative of the role they played in making the original series a lasting television favorite.
