Jim Nabors Stayed Loyal To A Friend Even When It Cost Him His TV Show

For millions of television viewers, Jim Nabors will always be remembered as the lovable Gomer Pyle, the kindhearted Marine whose innocence and humor made him one of the most popular sitcom characters of the 1960s. But away from the cameras, Nabors displayed the same loyalty and compassion that made Gomer so beloved.

According to Remind, loyalty played a surprising role in the fate of The Jim Nabors Hour. Although the musical variety series attracted respectable ratings, Nabors refused to make a decision that would have saved the show, choosing instead to stand by his longtime friend and co-star Frank Sutton.

Why ‘The Jim Nabors Hour’ Came To An End

After five successful seasons of Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C., Nabors wanted to explore another side of his talent. Already known for his powerful singing voice, he hoped to launch a musical variety show that combined songs, comedy sketches, and celebrity guests. CBS approved the idea, even though network executives were reluctant to end a sitcom that continued to perform well in the ratings.

Nabors also convinced Frank Sutton, who played Sgt. Vince Carter, to join the new series with the promise of a recurring role. The two friends enjoyed working together in a fresh format, and for a time, the show performed well. Eventually, however, CBS executives decided the comedy sketches featuring Sutton were holding the program back and pushed Nabors to reduce—or completely remove—his friend’s role.

Loyalty Over Ratings

Instead of giving in to the network’s demands, Jim Nabors stood firmly by Sutton. He refused to fire the actor who had supported him during the transition from Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C., to his new show, even though he understood the decision could jeopardize the series. CBS canceled The Jim Nabors Hour during its “rural purge,” when the network dropped several successful rural-themed shows, including The Beverly Hillbillies, Green Acres, and Petticoat Junction.

Sutton died of a heart attack in 1974 while preparing to perform on stage, bringing a tragic end to the life of the actor best known as Sgt. Carter. Looking back, Jim Nabors never regretted standing by his friend. His decision remains one of the clearest examples that, for him, loyalty mattered far more than television ratings.
