- HBO Max has removed ‘Gone With the Wind’ from its library.
- The decision is receiving some backlash.
- However, HBO Max released a statement about the decision.
Right now, many protests are going on around the country. Many companies are supporting the movement in different ways. During tensions, HBO Max has decided to pull Gone With the Wind from its library. A statement has said that it will be returned eventually, but with some type of disclaimer and discussion about race.
The film has been criticized for years due to its depiction of black people. The movie was made in 1939 and takes place at an Atlanta plantation. HBO Max’s decision has sparked both praise and backlash on social media.
‘Gone With the Wind’ is no longer available to watch on HBO Max
Daily Caller’s Greg Price pointed out, “Hattie McDaniel was the first African-American actor to win an Oscar for her role in ‘Gone With the Wind.’ It’s also her birthday tomorrow. Way to erase a historic black achievement in the name of social justice.”

HBO Max released a statement that read, “‘Gone With the Wind’ is a product of its time and depicts some of the ethnic and racial prejudices that have, unfortunately, been commonplace in American society. These racist depictions were wrong then and are wrong today, and we felt that to keep this title up without an explanation and a denouncement of those depictions would be irresponsible.”
The statement continued, “These depictions are certainly counter to WarnerMedia’s values, so when we return the film to HBO Max, it will return with a discussion of its historical context and a denouncement of those very depictions but will be presented as it was originally created because to do otherwise would be the same as claiming these prejudices never existed. If we are to create a more just, equitable, and inclusive future, we must first acknowledge and underhand our history.”
What’s your take on HBO Max’s decision to remove Gone With the Wind for now?
Brian Schumacher says
I enjoy all movies, I don’t see this movie as being racist in any way… it’s fictional, and enjoyable. Why should we ban such things as movies and decry race hate. Yes, there is hate, no it is not as vast or huge as some in media, Hollywood or the sports world will lead you to believe.
These so called top people who tell us that racism is rampant, and that police are violent are not in OUR world. These rich, powerful and high ups who live in walled off mansions, shop in well protected stores have no right to tell us what is right or wrong. we know what happened recently was horrible, and justice will be served, but to punish all by doing things like this, is not the solution.
I kneel before God, I respect the flag, I respect all life, all lives, and by saying these things I am not declaring myself racist, but an American who cares and respect all people. We need to stop this, we need to learn to unite, all of us, together… in this way we can overcome the hate, but taking down movies, music and other things in support of violence, looting and rampant destruction is NOT the way to go.
God bless, and God bless our country and our President

For all those who wish to erase history and have been tearing down statues and such, you are going to have to raze Charleston SC and the surrounding plantations in order for ‘out of site out of mind’ to work.
Deborah Kimmick says
Gone with the Wind is my all time favorite movie. I never related it to racism. This is the way life was during that time. Erasing our history, even in movies, is a bad idea and only panders to the people who are trying to control us.

Oh, I get it. We are now at a time in our society when we need to be told what we can watch and can’t watch. Evidently we are all too dumb now to realize an 81 year old classic, which awarded an Oscar to the first African/American recipient, might have some “out of date” ideas included. It was 1939, people. Most of the country was unaware of racism as we see it now and it is only now in this “offended” culture created by the Media, Hollywood, and people trying to undermine the society we live in that it comes up. Grow up HBO and stop pandering to the left.
