McDonald’s is one of the most classic fast food restaurant chains in the world. They’re known for their juicy burgers and having the best damn fries in the world that you don’t come in a big enough size. The chain has officially announced that it will remove all artificial ingredients from their burgers.
Classic menu items like the Quarter Pounder with Cheese and the Big Mac will be served preservative free. The announcement came on September 26th effective immediately, and it’s definitely a step in the right (and healthier) direction!
The changes will be made directly affecting every single ingredient right down to the sauces and buns. However, the one ingredient that will remain the same is the pickles. For customers who are really feeling the ‘preservative free’ lifestyle change that McDonald’s is tackling, they can order their meals without pickles.
The official McDonald’s company actually shared their own short statement on their Twitter account on the new, healthier improvements. The statement read, “We’re excited to announce our classic burgers have no artificial preservatives, no artificial flavors and no added colors from artificial sources! Our pickle contains an artificial preservative, so skip it if you like. Changes you can feel good about!”

McDonald’s has been working tirelessly over the last few years to make this happen. They’ve gradually been removing artificial ingredients in hopes to attract customers who might be more health-conscious. All of the menu food items that will be affected by these preservative-free changes are listed below:
- Hamburger
- Cheeseburger
- Double cheeseburger
- McDouble
- Quarter Pounder with Cheese
- Double Quarter Pounder with Cheese
- Big Mac
The official statement from the company documented McDonald’s gradual changes to become a fast-food chain with healthier ingredients. They said, “Since 2014, McDonald’s USA has been on a food journey. We’ve been laser-focused on using our size and scale to implement meaningful changes across our entire menu, changes that we know are important to our customers, our franchisees, our people and our planet.”
“We’ve evolved everything from when we serve certain items, to how we cook our beef patties, to the ingredients we use across our menu. And now, we’ve taken that journey to new heights.”
This isn’t the first time McDonald’s has stripped their food items of artificial ingredients. In 2016, the same was done to their classic Chicken McNuggets. Additionally, they removed high-fructose corn syrup from their burger buns. About one-third of the menu items are left with artificial preservatives, including their Egg McMuffins and Filet-o-Fish.
The company additionally has switched to 100% fresh beef for their quarter pounders and plan to commit to cage-free eggs by the year 2025.
