Thankfully for a lot of us there are documentaries, artfully crafted films that give a sneak peak into the minds and lives of the people that create the music that has touched our hearts. So, today DoYouRemember has compiled a list of our favorite rock docs. Madonna: Truth or Dare (1991) Watch the queen of pop do what she does best: cuddle with naked gay guys. Apart from that, you get a glimpse at her short-lived relationship with famed Hollywood leading man Warren Beatty. Their mercurial tryst juxtaposes the old and new paradigms of celebrity, summed up in Beatty’s infamous words: “She doesn’t want to live off-camera.” Click "Next" To Continue The Beatles: Let It Be (1970) I don’t know about you, but my favorite part of this Beatles doc is watching Yoko sit by John Lennon for every single session. She had it all: the hair, the glasses and the feathered boa. And just like in any millennial teen movie, the alt girl is always the high-school reject who gets laughed out of her small town (in Janis’ case, it’s Port Arthur, Texas). Watch the singing sensation perform the blues, and elucidate the seminal moments of her adolescence. If you own every Ramones T-shirt they sell at Urban Outfitters, you’ll probably be confused by it. Though the band’s image has, sadly, trickled down the musical gutter to the province of the biker-shorts-clad, Coachella-roaming pseudo-hipster, their innovative genius lives on in this movie. And this one does not disappoint. Billed as the swan song of the group The Band, The Last Waltz is a concert doc with a star-studded lineup. It’s hailed as one of the greatest rock films of all time. Click "Next" To Continue The Rolling Stones: Gimme Shelter (1970) This Rolling Stones doc chronicles the last days of their 1969 tour and the disastrous Altamont Free Concert, when the Hells Angels—hired as security—bludgeoned a number of young Stones fans. This Maysles Brothers film is a prime example of the Direct Cinema movement, which chronicles events as they occur naturally rather than portraying them through interviews and reenactments.
