Millions of people have watched Baby Houseman run up the aisle and leap into Johnny Castle’s arms, some of them dozens of times. One young woman with a front-row claim to the movie has seen it exactly once. That would be Jennifer Grey’s daughter Stella Gregg, now 24, and the reason she gave her mother is a lot more personal than a bad review.
The story is making the rounds again after Hello! revisited it this week, but it isn’t new. Grey first told the tale in August 2022, when Dirty Dancing turned 35, and she was promoting her memoir Out of the Corner. To understand why it landed the way it did, you have to start with Grey’s own famous father.
What Was It Like Growing Up as Joel Grey’s Daughter?

Jennifer Grey was born in New York City on March 26, 1960, which makes her 66 today, and show business was the family business from the start. Her father, Joel Grey, married stage performer Jo Wilder in 1958, and when Jennifer was about six, he opened on Broadway as the leering Master of Ceremonies in Cabaret. He won a Tony for it in 1967 and an Oscar for the 1972 film.
Watching him transform backstage left a mark. In her memoir, she wrote that the white greasepaint “blotted out any trace of my dad as I knew him,” a line that reads differently once you know how much of her own life would turn on a changed face. Joel Grey, born April 11, 1932, is 94 and still with us. Jo Wilder died on July 4, 2026, at 94, a week after a lung cancer diagnosis, and Jennifer wrote on Instagram that her mother “chose grace over fear.”
The daughter of the Emcee was always going to try acting herself. Nobody, including Jennifer, guessed which role would follow her for the rest of her life.
Did She Really Think Patrick Swayze Was Wrong for Johnny?
She did, at first. Grey and Patrick Swayze had clashed on Red Dawn in 1984, and when she heard he had been cast opposite her, her reaction was blunt. “Oh, no. He’s not right,” she recalled to AARP in 2022, before adding, “I was dead wrong.”
The movie that opened in August 1987 was a low-budget summer picture that turned into a phenomenon, and “(I’ve Had) The Time of My Life” went on to win the Oscar for Best Original Song. Readers who have seen it more times than they will admit may be surprised by one detail about that final lift. Grey told CBS News she “never rehearsed it, never done it since.” You can see where the rest of the cast landed in our look at the Dirty Dancing cast then and now.
Swayze died of pancreatic cancer in 2009, and Grey has spoken about him with tenderness ever since. “There will never be another Johnny. There will never be another Patrick,” she told Entertainment Weekly in 2022. By then she had already lived through the strangest chapter of her career, and it started in a surgeon’s office.
Why Did Hollywood Stop Recognizing Jennifer Grey?

In the early 1990s, Grey had two operations on her nose; the second one was meant to fix the first. The result made her a stranger to her own audience. “I went in the operating room a celebrity and came out anonymous,” she said in a 2006 interview, and in 2022 she told AARP that “having my identity dramatically eradicated overnight was the hardest thing I’ve ever been through.”
Her life found a new center anyway. She married actor Clark Gregg, now 64 and best known as Agent Coulson in the Marvel films, on July 21, 2001, and Stella was born on December 3 that year. Then came a comeback few people saw coming. In 2010, at 50 and after neck surgery and treatment for thyroid cancer, Grey won season 11 of Dancing with the Stars with Derek Hough. More recently she played Marcia in A Real Pain (2024).
Grey and Gregg announced in July 2020 that they had separated amicably, and their divorce was final in 2021. Their joint statement called Stella “the wonderful daughter we’ve raised,” and that daughter was about to follow both parents into the family trade.
What Is Stella Gregg Doing Now?

Stella is acting. As a child, she appeared in her father’s 2013 film Trust Me, turned up on his series Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., and played Berni in the 2024 TV movie He Slid Into Her DMs. IMDb also lists her in an upcoming project called Texas Man & Whisper Girl.
She and her mother are close, and Grey doesn’t hide it. “24 years ago today my favorite person burst onto the scene,” Grey wrote on Instagram on Stella’s birthday last December. Stella answered in the comments with “Mamaaaaaaa” and a row of hearts.
Grey’s next chapter brings her straight back to Kellerman’s. In January 2026, Lionsgate confirmed a Dirty Dancing sequel with Grey returning as Baby and serving as an executive producer, written by Kim Rosenstock and produced by Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson. Producers have since said it will be set in the 1990s, though no release date or full cast has been announced. “I’ve long wondered where we might find Baby years later,” Grey said in her statement. Which brings us back to the one person in her life who isn’t counting the days.
Why Jennifer Grey’s Daughter Stella Won’t Watch ‘Dirty Dancing’

Grey explained it to Entertainment Weekly in that 2022 anniversary interview, when Stella was 20. “I think she saw it once. She did not like it and did not want to watch it again,” she said. She wasn’t even sure Stella had ever gone back to it.
Then she gave the reason, and it had nothing to do with the dancing or the dialogue. Stella “did not want to see me dancing with anybody but Daddy,” Grey said, “and it bugged her.” For a girl whose father was Clark Gregg, watching her mother fall in love with Johnny Castle on screen felt less like a classic and more like a family betrayal. Millions of fans would give anything to be in that corner. Stella just wanted her mom dancing with her dad.
