Simon Le Bon Turns 68, Decades After Surviving A Terrifying Brush With Death

by Dana Daly

Published October 28, 2026

Simon Le Bon, the charismatic frontman of Duran Duran, celebrated his 68th birthday on October 27. Born in 1958, the British singer became one of the defining faces of the 1980s, captivating fans with hits like “Hungry Like the Wolf,” “Rio,” and “The Reflex.” But at the height of his fame, Le Bon experienced a terrifying ordeal that nearly cost him his life.

In August 1985, just one month after Duran Duran’s unforgettable performance at Live Aid, the 26-year-old singer found himself trapped beneath an overturned yacht in the waters off England’s southwestern coast. With seawater rising around him and only a small pocket of air keeping him alive, Le Bon faced what he later described as the most dangerous experience of his life.

On August 11, 1985, Le Bon was competing in the prestigious Fastnet yacht race aboard his 78-foot racing yacht, Drum, when disaster struck. The vessel’s keel broke away from its hull, causing the boat to capsize. According to People, 18 crew members managed to scramble onto the overturned hull, but Le Bon and five others were trapped inside.

The singer had been asleep when the accident occurred. Suddenly, he was surrounded by water, tangled equipment, and other crew members struggling to escape. The six men survived inside a small air pocket, breathing a dangerous mixture of diesel fumes and battery acid vapors as they waited approximately 40 minutes for rescuers to reach them. “That was when I looked into the eyes of death,” Le Bon later recalled.

Help finally arrived in the form of a Royal Navy rescue helicopter and diver Larry Slater, who swam beneath the overturned yacht to reach the trapped men. But Le Bon’s escape brought one final frightening moment. As he attempted to swim toward the surface, his long underwear became snagged, preventing him from reaching air. He managed to free himself by removing the garment underwater before finally surfacing and being pulled into the helicopter.

The dramatic rescue made headlines around the world, partly because the famous singer emerged wearing only his underwear. Le Bon later found humor in the embarrassing moment, but the experience left lasting emotional scars. According to People, he struggled with insomnia and developed a stress-related rash afterward. He also avoided watching footage of his rescue for more than three decades.

The Experience Simon Le Bon Never Forgot

It wasn’t until 2016 that Le Bon finally watched the footage while participating in a BBC documentary about the Royal Navy helicopter squadron that saved him. As reported by BBC News, he was visibly moved by the images and expressed enormous gratitude toward the rescuers who had risked their own lives. He also managed to laugh at the sight of himself being rescued in his underwear, joking about a rock star appearing on camera in such an unexpected state.

Remarkably, the accident didn’t end Le Bon’s love of sailing. In 2005, he returned to the Fastnet race aboard the very same yacht, joined by some of his original crewmates. In an interview published by Duran Duran’s official website, he acknowledged that passing the location where the disaster occurred would be an emotional moment, but said completing the race would give the crew a sense of vindication.

Now 68, Le Bon continues to perform with Duran Duran, more than four decades after the band first became international superstars. Reflecting on the accident for its 40th anniversary in 2025, he acknowledged that the experience had changed his life, although he recognized that everyone encounters moments that alter their perspective. For the millions of fans who followed Duran Duran through the 1980s, the memory of their favorite singer’s dramatic rescue remains one of the most extraordinary chapters in his remarkable life.
