Judy Norton Reveals The One Thing She Wishes She Had Told ‘The Waltons’ Creator Earl Hamner Jr.

by Ruth A

Published October 8, 2026

Judy Norton has spent decades looking back fondly on The Waltons, but one memory still comes with a touch of regret. The actress, who became a household name as Mary Ellen Walton, recently reflected on the show’s creator, Earl Hamner Jr., and admitted she wishes she had taken more time to talk with him when she was younger.

According to Yahoo Entertainment, the Judy Norton and Waltons story is full of warm memories, but Norton now recognizes how much history surrounded her on the set. Looking back, she said young actors do not always understand how valuable those conversations can become later in life.

Hamner based The Waltons on his own Depression-era childhood in Schuyler, Virginia, drawing inspiration from his real family and earlier work, including Spencer’s Mountain and The Homecoming: A Christmas Story. Norton first played Mary Ellen in The Homecoming before continuing the role throughout the CBS series.

Years later, Norton said she wishes she had spoken with Hamner more about his life and experiences. “Sometimes when you’re young, you’re incredibly self-absorbed,” she explained, adding that young people often do not realize how much the people around them have to share. She did, however, get the chance to meet Marion, the real woman who inspired Mary Ellen. Norton said Marion was lovely and that she treasured hearing that the real-life inspiration approved of her portrayal.

The Judy Norton and the Waltons connection remains strong because the cast never completely drifted apart. Norton has called the people one of the greatest gifts of the experience and said they still feel like “family,” keeping in touch and reuniting whenever possible. Those reunions often happen at fan events, which she says feel like family gatherings. More appearances are planned, giving longtime viewers another chance to reconnect with the actors who made Walton’s Mountain feel so real.

Norton also shares memories through her YouTube channel, Behind the Scenes with Judy Norton, where she posts episode discussions, interviews, and stories from the series. She launched the channel in 2020, giving fans a place to revisit the show through someone who lived it. More than 50 years after The Waltons became a television favorite, Norton’s memories show why it still means so much to cast and viewers. The show gave her a defining role, lifelong friendships, and countless stories—along with a reminder to appreciate the people around you while there is still time to ask questions.
