ABBA Star Agnetha Fältskog Revealed The Terror That Pushed Her Away From Fame

by Ruth A

Published September 26, 2026

To millions of ABBA fans, Agnetha Fältskog seemed to disappear from public life after the group’s extraordinary run came to an end. While Benny Andersson, Björn Ulvaeus, and Anni-Frid Lyngstad continued appearing publicly, Fältskog often stayed away, eventually earning a reputation as the famously private—and sometimes mysterious—member of the Swedish supergroup.

According to the Daily News, there was much more behind her absence than simply wanting to avoid fame. Fältskog once explained that a frightening experience in the air intensified an already existing phobia and dramatically changed the way she traveled. The Agnetha Fältskog fear of flying became so severe that it shaped both her touring life and the public perception that followed her for years.

A Terrifying Flight Changed the Way Agnetha Fältskog Traveled

During ABBA’s 1979 U.S. tour, Fältskog traveled aboard a private plane from New York to Boston when the aircraft encountered dangerously turbulent weather. She recalled that the plane had to make an emergency landing after the pilot failed on the first attempt. Fältskog already disliked flying, but she later described the incident as the turning point that made the fear much worse.

For years afterward, she largely avoided air travel. Instead, Fältskog spent about eight years getting around by road in a private coach. Because her bandmates continued traveling more frequently, photographs sometimes showed the other three ABBA members without her. Those images helped fuel the idea that Fältskog had withdrawn completely from the outside world, even though her reluctance to travel explained at least part of her absence.

Stage Fright Also Made Life in the Spotlight Difficult

Flying was not Fältskog’s only struggle. She also dealt with stage fright and later chose to avoid full-scale touring, preferring studio work, television appearances, and a quieter life. The Agnetha Fältskog fear of flying improved with therapy, though road travel brought its own danger: in 1983, a private bus carrying her overturned on a Swedish highway. She survived and later said she must have had a guardian angel.

Fältskog’s quieter years make more sense in light of her struggles with travel and performing. Rather than simply retreating from fame, she found ways to keep making music without constantly facing situations that overwhelmed her. For ABBA fans, the Agnetha Fältskog fear of flying helps explain why she often appeared less publicly than her former bandmates.
