Norm Macdonald Documentary Unearths Rare Home Videos And Behind-The-Scenes Footage

More than five years after Norm Macdonald’s death, fans will soon get a new look at the comedian’s life and career—largely through his own words. Netflix has unveiled the trailer for Norm: The Tale of Norm Macdonald, a new film directed by Judd Apatow that arrives on the streaming service Oct. 16.

According to Rolling Stone, rather than surrounding Macdonald’s story with newly recorded celebrity interviews, the Norm Macdonald documentary takes a more personal approach. Apatow assembled archival footage, photographs, and rare home videos contributed by friends and fans, allowing the late comedian’s unmistakable voice and famously dry sense of humor to remain at the center of the film.

The trailer jumps through several chapters of Macdonald’s career, from his years behind the Weekend Update desk on Saturday Night Live to his later movie appearances and stand-up performances. It also includes footage of the comedian interacting with familiar names such as David Letterman, Jim Carrey, Adam Sandler, and Sarah Silverman.

Macdonald also discusses one of the most famous turning points of his career: his departure from Saturday Night Live. The comedian became closely associated with Weekend Update during the 1990s, where his deadpan delivery and willingness to push jokes in unexpected directions helped establish the style fans continued to love long after he left the show. The new film appears ready to revisit both the triumphs and the more complicated moments that shaped his path.

Apatow’s choice to rely on existing material gives the project a different feeling from the traditional celebrity documentary. Instead of asking friends and colleagues to explain who Macdonald was, Norm uses footage gathered across his lifetime so viewers can hear him tell stories, make jokes, and reflect on his experiences himself. Netflix says the film includes personal photographs and rare home videos alongside career footage.

That approach feels particularly fitting for a comedian whose delivery was such a large part of his appeal. Macdonald could turn a winding story, an awkward pause, or an intentionally strange punchline into something uniquely his own. For longtime viewers who remember him from Weekend Update, his stand-up specials, and countless late-night appearances, the Norm Macdonald documentary promises something more intimate than a simple career retrospective. It offers one more chance to spend time with the voice, timing, and perspective that made him unlike almost anyone else in comedy.
