George Jones’ Widow Says She Spent 32 Years “Saving” Him—Now She’s Finally Living For Herself

by Ruth A

Published August 25, 2026

For more than three decades, Nancy Jones stood beside country music legend George Jones through some of the most difficult years of his life. Now, 13 years after his death, the 77-year-old widow says she is allowing herself something she missed for a long time: the chance to simply enjoy life.

According to People, Nancy Jones today describes herself as more mellow than she once was, and she makes no apologies for going out and having fun. During an August 20 appearance on the Drifting Cowboy podcast, she reflected on the 32 years she spent helping her husband through addiction, personal struggles, and eventually sobriety. After devoting so much of herself to that chapter, she believes she has earned the freedom to enjoy this one.

Nancy Jones Today Is Finally Having Some Fun

George Jones / Wikipedia

Nancy married George in 1983 and quickly realized how serious his struggles with alcohol and drugs had become. Although she continued to see the good man behind those problems, helping him through his darkest periods demanded patience and persistence. She later chronicled their turbulent years together in her 2023 memoir, Playin’ Possum: My Memories of George Jones.

Her efforts became an important part of George’s recovery story. After a near-fatal car accident in 1999, the country star finally achieved lasting sobriety. Nancy recalled that doctors initially gave her little reason for optimism, but George survived and remained sober until his death from respiratory failure in 2013 at age 81. George himself had publicly credited his wife with helping save his life years earlier.

Their Marriage Survived Some Painful Years

George Jones became one of country music’s greatest voices, though his personal life was often troubled by addiction. Nancy has spoken openly about the difficult years while also saying she believed in the good person beneath the chaos. She later witnessed a healthier final chapter, as Jones stayed away from alcohol and cigarettes after his 1999 accident. Nancy continues to preserve his legacy and plans to host a Nashville celebration for what would have been his 95th birthday.

Seeing Nancy Jones today enjoying herself carries extra meaning when placed beside everything that came before. Her life with George included fame and beloved country songs, but it also required years of strength behind closed doors. Now, more than a decade after saying goodbye, she is giving herself permission to live a little more freely. After spending 32 years fighting for the man she loved, Nancy seems ready to make this stage of life her own.
