Joan Rivers Changed Her Name Before Fame—But Even Her Daughter Isn’t Sure Why

by Ruth A

Published August 19, 2026

Before Joan Rivers became one of the sharpest and most recognizable voices in American comedy, she was Joan Alexandra Molinsky, a young performer trying to find her footing in show business. Like many aspiring entertainers of her era, she eventually adopted a stage name that sounded a little more suited to Hollywood.

According to People, the story behind Joan Rivers’s name change is surprisingly simple. Her daughter, Melissa Rivers, recently admitted that even the family does not have one perfectly clear version of how the surname came about. What seems certain is that the name appeared early in Joan’s acting career and quickly stuck.

Why Did Joan Rivers Change Her Name?

Joan explained the decision herself in a 2007 interview with the Television Academy. She said she wanted to become an actress and did not spend much time overthinking what her new stage name should be. According to her version of events, the first agent who sent her on auditions was named Larry Rivers, so she decided to become Joan Rivers.

Melissa later offered a slightly different recollection of what her mother had told her. She said the surname may have belonged to one of Joan’s managers, or perhaps a manager simply suggested it because it sounded good. Either way, the Joan Rivers name change was less of a carefully planned reinvention and more of a practical show-business decision that happened to become permanent.

The New Name Soon Became Famous Far Beyond Acting

Joan initially hoped to become an actress, even appearing in Driftwood alongside Barbra Streisand. But comedy soon became her calling. By the 1960s, she was developing the fearless style that made her a television star. Rivers later won an Emmy and Grammy, earned a Tony nomination, and became famous for her sharp red-carpet interviews and jokes about aging, fame, and fashion.

Melissa eventually adopted her mother’s famous surname professionally as well. Although her legal last name came from her father, producer Edgar Rosenberg, she began using Rivers in the early 1990s because she wanted her mother to receive recognition for everything she had accomplished. In the end, a name chosen almost casually became one of comedy’s most recognizable. Joan may not have spent years planning it, but “Rivers” soon represented a career defined by ambition, resilience, and a refusal to blend quietly into the background.
