Audrey Hepburn Kept Her Love Life So Secret That Few Knew About Her Passionate Hollywood Affair

by Ruth A

Published August 19, 2026

Audrey Hepburn became one of Hollywood’s most admired stars, but the life she wanted most had little to do with fame. Behind the elegance of Breakfast at Tiffany’s, Roman Holiday, and My Fair Lady was a woman who reportedly dreamed of a peaceful home, children, and a lasting relationship away from the pressures of celebrity.

According to People, new reflections from people who studied and knew the actress reveal more about the Audrey Hepburn love life she kept remarkably private. Although Hepburn married twice and experienced other important relationships, author Pamela Keogh says discretion remained one of her defining qualities. Even when the public adored her, she rarely allowed her romances to become public entertainment.

Hepburn married actor and director Mel Ferrer in 1954, and they welcomed their son Sean in 1960. Keogh explained that Ferrer initially offered Hepburn valuable support as she navigated Hollywood. Their dynamic changed, however, as her career soared and she became one of the biggest movie stars in the world. The couple eventually divorced in 1968 after nearly 14 years of marriage.

Hepburn married Italian psychiatrist Andrea Dotti the following year, and they welcomed son Luca in 1970. According to Keogh, Hepburn took marriage seriously and worked hard to preserve both relationships despite their difficulties. Her parents’ divorce had deeply affected her, and she reportedly wanted the stable family life she had missed growing up. That desire may help explain why she remained committed to trying to make her marriages work even when problems arose.

After her second marriage ended, Hepburn found lasting companionship with Dutch actor Robert Wolders. They began their relationship in the early 1980s and remained together until her death in 1993. Those close to Hepburn described it as one of the happiest periods of her romantic life. Her son Luca Dotti later said that although they never married, they shared a life much like a married couple and traveled together during her UNICEF work.

Remnants of the Past/X

Looking back at the Audrey Hepburn love life adds another dimension to the woman behind one of cinema’s most enduring images. Audiences remember the gowns, effortless grace, and unforgettable performances, but Hepburn herself apparently valued something far simpler. Beneath the Hollywood glamour was someone searching for love, stability, and the quiet family life that fame could never guarantee.
