For nearly 40 years, fans have held out hope for The Goonies 2. But Josh Brolin, who starred in the 1985 classic, says he isn’t rushing to sign on. While he cherishes the original, he fears a sequel could harm what made it special.
Speaking to Entertainment Tonight at the premiere of Weapons, Brolin reflected on the movie’s lasting impact. “I hope it does happen because the experience was so great,” he said. “The movie is received so well, generation after generation. It’s just everything good about it. The trepidation that I have is that you release something else that taints that. I don’t want to taint what my memory of it is.”
Why Josh Brolin Is Hesitant for a ‘Goonies’ Sequel
According to Deadline, Brolin admitted he would only return if the story feels right. He even joked about the challenges of revisiting the characters decades later. “It’s like, ‘Oh, we came out with another,’ and then the Goonies grew up, came out with their walkers, and fell off a cliff because they couldn’t see very well,” he laughed. “Maybe it could be great. If it’s great, you’ll know. If Spielberg approves it, you know it’s going to be good.”
So far, Steven Spielberg hasn’t approved any scripts. “I think there’s been five scripts so far, and he hasn’t approved anything yet,” Brolin revealed. “I’m picky, Spielberg is picky, and he has a reason to be because he has great taste.”
What’s Happening With ‘The Goonies 2’?
Despite Brolin’s caution, a sequel is in development. Warner Bros. has brought in writer Potsy Ponciroli to draft the script, with Spielberg, Chris Columbus, and Amblin Entertainment producing. A director hasn’t been named, but anticipation grew after the cast reunited at TCL Chinese Theatre to celebrate Ke Huy Quan’s hand and foot imprint ceremony.
For now, Josh Brolin and the rest of the cast remain undecided. Fans will have to wait to see if a new adventure can live up to the original magic of The Goonies.
