Jeremy Renner, who gained stardom with his role as serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer in the 2002 movie Dahmer, was involved in a ghastly accident in January 2023 and was almost crushed to death by his own 14,000-pound PistenBully Snowcat while trying to stop it from crashing into his nephew. Since the tragic event, the 54-year-old has been vocal about the details of the horrific experience, along with the grueling recovery process, which has now become part of his new memoir, My Next Breath, which is due for release on April 29.

In a new interview to promote his latest book, Renner opened up about the accident and how writing about it has helped him cope with the trauma.

Renner, who in his book described the extensive injuries he suffered, including more than 35 broken bones, and seeing his left eye with his right eye after hitting his head against the pavement, revealed to People that even though the accident was so devastating, he did not allow himself to dwell much on it but instead chose to embrace the positivity of his recovery process with renewed gratitude.

He explained that the ordeal helped him appreciate life more, and writing about it has served as an emotional release, thus allowing him to process each moment methodically.

Jeremy Renner credits his daughter for his swift recovery

Renner also revealed that his remarkable recovery following his near-fatal accident was primarily driven by his 12-year-old daughter, Ava, who became the driving force for him getting up on his feet as soon as possible.

The actor explained that in the aftermath of the accident, he saw fear and helplessness in his daughter’s eyes. Not wanting to subject her to the thoughts of losing her father at an early age, he assigned her small tasks to assist in his recovery, noting that it not only helped Ava cope but also allowed her to witness her father’s resilience firsthand, teaching her an important lesson about overcoming adversity.
