Bill Murray made a surprise appearance at SNL 50 to reveal his best Weekend Update anchors in Saturday Night Live history. His older brother, Brian Doyle-Murray topped the list, as he used to host the segment in the early ‘80s. Brian combined his delivery with unique wit, leaving a lasting impact. The late Norm Macdonald came in second, and then Jane Curtin and Dan Aykroyd.

The original Weekend Update host Chevy Chase came in fourth place, while Tina Fey appeared on the list twice — fifth position with Amy Poehler and sixth with Jimmy Fallon. Other icons that made the list include Seth Meyers, Dennis Miller, Kevin Nealon, and Colin Quinn. Fans questioned the selections, calling out Bill for omitting some names.

Brian has remained active in the entertainment industry long after his SNL days, voicing characters in animated shows like SpongeBob SquarePants, where he plays the Flying Dutchman. He has maintained a steady acting career over the years, starring in films such as Groundhog Day and 17 Again.

Fans still recognize his voice and comedic style in these productions, proving that his influence is timeless. He last appeared in last year’s The Christmas Letter and is reportedly starring in an upcoming SpongeBob movie this year. In all of this, Brian manages to keep a lower profile than Bill.

Fans react as Brian Doyle-Murray tops Bill Murray’s list

Bill’s ranking of Weekend Update anchors caused a divide among SNL fans, with some agreeing with Brian’s position as number one, while others felt some hosts like Christopher Guest, Colin Jost and Michael were overlooked and deserve more respect.

Some were satisfied at the mention of Curtin, Aykroyd, and Macdonald, arguing that they even deserve a higher ranking. Whether everyone agrees, Brian’s influence on Weekend Update remains undeniable. “Not thrilled with Colin at the bottom, but I’m all about the Brian Doyle-Murray love,” someone quipped.
