Do you ever feel like you’re stuck in the same routine? Bill Murray’s Groundhog Day takes that feeling to the extreme. In the 1993 comedy, he plays Phil Connors, a grumpy weatherman who relives February 2nd over and over again while covering Groundhog Day in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania.
The movie became a cult favorite and turned the real town into a tourist hotspot. In 2025, you can stream Groundhog Day on Prime Video with an Amazon Prime membership. If you’d rather rent it, Apple TV, YouTube, Google Play, and Fandango are offering it for $3.99. Other popular streaming platforms like Netflix, Hulu, and Max do not have Groundhog Day.
Bill Murray’s ‘Groundhog Day’ turned Punxsutawney into a tourist hotspot
Before Groundhog Day hit the theaters, Punxsutawney’s annual event drew around 15,000 visitors; however, the year after the premiere release, that number jumped to 35,000. Today, Punxsutawney and Woodstock, Illinois — where the movie was filmed — celebrate the holiday with festivals, screenings, and events.
Groundhog Day lands on Sunday, February 2, 2025. While it’s not an official holiday, thousands gather to see Punxsutawney Phil. The event streams live on Visit Pennsylvania’s website, so you don’t have to stand in the cold to catch the prediction.
What happens at the ‘Groundhog Day’ Festival?
The first official Groundhog Day happened in 1887 in Punxsutawney, years before Bill Murray acted in the film and according to tradition, Punxsutawney Phil steps out of his burrow to “predict” the weather. If he sees his shadow, winter drags on for six more weeks. If he does not, then spring arrives early.
Despite the excitement, meteorologists say Phil is unreliable — he’s only been right about 30 percent of the time in the past decade. Still, the festival keeps growing. The Punxsutawney Groundhog Club hosts events leading up to the big day, turning a small-town tradition into a national spectacle.
