Pat Sajak is still remembered today as the longest-serving host of a game show on television. Sajak was at the helms of affairs on the popular Wheel of Fortune for an impressive 41 seasons, turning it into a staple in millions of American homes, hosting over 8,000 episodes while guiding viewers through the show’s well-known word puzzles and creating several memorable moments that continue to have an impact today.
Aside from his professional achievements, the former host’s kind and friendly attitude won over the audience, participants, and colleagues. To attest to this fact, a former Wheel of Fortune staff recently spoke about the amazing time he had while working alongside Sajak as a stand-in announcer on the popular game show.
Former ‘Wheel of Fortune’ announcer answers the question, what is Pat Sajak like?
During an appearance on the Wheel Of Fortune’s Come On Big Money podcast hosted by former contestant Raul, Rich Fields who served as replacement announcer after the death of Charlie O’Donnell, he shared his experience working with the legendary Pat Sajak.
He explained that when he landed the Wheel of Fortune gig, he was at a career crossroad contemplating on whether to continue working as a Weather Man on CBS. However, he disclosed that he was shocked at the warm welcome he received from both Pat Sajak and his co-host, Vanna White, both of whom he described as “professional people.”
Rich Fields claims Pat Sajak boosted his morale on his first day as ‘Wheel of Fortune’ announcer
The 64-year-old, who had previously worked as an announcer for Bob Barker on The Price Is Right, talked about his first time as an employee of Wheel of Fortune. He admitted he was under a lot of pressure since he had to take over the position left by the legendary O’Donnell, whose voice had come to define the program.
However, Fields revealed that the great support and encouragement he got from the show’s seasoned host quickly eased his fears. From their first meeting in Sajak’s dressing room, he felt at ease and at peace as the 78-year-old acknowledged the difficult circumstances he was in and advised him to focus on performing his duties to the best of his abilities while honoring the late former announcer’s memory by making unique contributions to the longstanding gameshow.
