Greek Island Locals Rarely Suffer From Dementia Because They Consume These Two Drinks

what to drink to avoid dementia

There might be an increase in dementia all around the world, but there’s a small Greek island, where dementia is a rare condition. Unlike in many parts of the world, where memory loss and cognitive decline are common among older adults, people here grow old with sharp minds. Scientists believe the difference lies in their lifestyle choices, particularly diet, daily activities, and social habits.

In Ikaria, they follow a way of life that naturally protects their brains. They eat fresh, unprocessed foods, engage in daily physical activity, and maintain strong social connections. But one of the most fascinating aspects of their routine is what they drink. They drink herbal teas and coffee daily, which they claim plays a role in keeping dementia at bay.

Herbal teas are an essential part of life in this community. They commonly drink teas made from local plants such as sage, rosemary, and mountain tea. These herbs are rich in antioxidants, which help protect the brain from damage caused by free radicals. Studies suggest that compounds in these plants also have anti-inflammatory properties, which may lower the risk of cognitive decline and dementia. These herbal teas are a powerful natural remedy for inflammation in the brain.

Coffee is another staple in their daily routine. Unlike the usual high-sugar, heavily processed coffee drinks popular in many countries, they prefer simple, traditional coffee. Research suggests that moderate coffee consumption can improve memory, boost brain function, and reduce the risk of dementia. The caffeine and antioxidants in coffee may help maintain mental alertness, especially in older adults.

How do they avoid dementia

The lifestyle of Ikranians explains why they hardly experience cognitive decline and dementia. They eat meals with fresh vegetables, olive oil, and fish, which contain essential nutrients that support cognitive function. They also engage in daily activities such as farming, walking, and household chores, to keep both their bodies and minds active. Apart from the physicals, they also build strong connections amongst each other, which elevates their social life and activities.

In contrast, dementia rates in America continue to rise, partly due to a diet high in processed foods, a more sedentary lifestyle, and increased social isolation. While genetics play a role, it is clear that lifestyle choices make a difference. Adopting some of these habits, such as drinking herbal teas, choosing natural foods, and staying physically active,  could help reduce the risk of dementia.
