Millennials have brought back flamboyant Christmas decor featuring baubles, big red bows, tinsel, and lots of color, which is a contrast from Gen Z’s minimalist preference. A mother of three stoked the conversation on TikTok after posting her very busy tree.
Miranda Revee’s tree stood magnificently in her living room, covered in colored string lights, and ornaments. She also designed the surroundings with tinsel, a plastic Santa figurine, and Christmas village statues. “‘90s nostalgic Christmas décor is coming back and I’m here for it,” her caption read.
Gen Z and Millennial TikTok users debate Christmas decor
Renee proudly announced that the point of her Christmas decor was to create a nostalgic feeling, and a visitor said it reminded them of childhood. “That’s exactly what I was going for,” she wrote. Most millennials in the comments cheered the over-the-top style, but Gen Z’s seemed unimpressed.
It was a nostalgia fest for the older generation, who noted that Christmas used to be about family but is now about money and style. “When Christmas was magical and not a show home special, brilliant,” someone said. Younger ones, on the other hand, went, “Bro, what are you doing?” and called the decor “old-school.”
‘90s Christmas decor is back in style
Another mom, Massie Isabella shared her Christmas decor which was similar to Renee’s, noting that she was going “full, colorful, ‘90s, tacky, sexy” this year. “You cannot look at that and be sad,” she gushed. Her husband inspired TikTok user Erica Sally to do the same, as he wanted a Christmas that reminded him of childhood.
Every inch of her tree was embellished with glitter, light, ornamental balls, and icicle-looking tinsel that hung from the branches. “This is what I wanted but no one understood my vision,” another mom lamented in the comments, and other parents of Gen Z kids could relate to her plight.
