Art Garfunkel and Paul Simon recently reunited over lunch after years of estrangement due to creative differences. They last performed together at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival in April 2010, while also pursuing their solo careers.
Following their emotional meetup at the Pierre Hotel in New York City, Art hopes their mended friendship can blossom into a working relationship again if Paul is interested. He admitted to feeling relieved about their reconciliation and is satisfied whether they collaborate again or not.
Are Simon and Garfunkel coming back with new music?
So far, neither Art nor Paul has confirmed any upcoming music as Simon and Garfunkel; however, Art recently released an album with his son Garfunkel Jr. Father and Son was out on November 8, and it features covers of classics like “Blue Moon,” The Beatles’ “Blackbird,” “Time After Time” by Cyndi Lauper, and “Here Comes The Rain Again.”
The album marked the official debut of Art and his son’s band Garfunkel and Garfunkel, which they established recently. Paul is also excelling at his independent music career, his last release being Seven Psalms in April 2023. Sadly, Paul lost hearing in his left ear but hopes to continue doing live shows regardless.
Why did Simon and Garfunkel break up?
Art and Paul were best friends and career partners until the former took up a role in 1970’s Catch-22. This led to a decline in his dedication to the band, leaving most of the hard work to Paul. Paul pointed out the imbalance in having to write the songs, while Art simply shows up to sing and share in the praise despite his minimal effort.
Paul decided to record solo without Art, leading to further tension between them. After their final studio album, Bridge Over Troubled Water, they went their separate ways with occasional comebacks in between. More than five decades later, and with both men in their eighties, fans might be getting new music from the duo.
